quote:
Jesse James was a lad that killed many a man,
He robbed the Danville train,
He stole from the rich and he gave to the poor,
He'd a hand and a heart and a brain.

CHORUS:
Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life,
Three children, they were brave;
But the dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard
Has laid Jesse James in his grave.
It was Robert Ford, that dirty little coward,
I wonder how he does feel,
For he ate of Jesse's bread and he slept in Jesse's bed,
Then he laid poor Jesse in his grave.

Jesse was a man, a friend to the poor,
He'd never see a man suffer pain,;
And with his brother Frank, he robbed the Chicago bank,
And stopped the Glendale train.

It was on a Wednesday night and the moon was shining bright,
They robbed the Glendale train,
And the people they did say for many miles away,
It was robbed by Frank and Jesse James.

lt was his brother Frank that robbed the Gallatin bank,
And carried the money from the town;
lt was in this very place that they had a little race,
For they shot Captain Sheets to the ground.

They went to the crossing not very far from there,
And there they did the same;
With the agent on his knees, he delivered up the keys
To the outlaws, Frank and Jesse James.

It was on Saturday night and Jesse was at home
Talking with his family brave,
Robert Ford came along like a thief in the night
And laid poor Jesse in his grave.

The people held their breath when they heard of Jesse's death,
And wondered how he ever came to die.
It was one of the gang called little Robert Ford,
He shot poor Jesse on the sly.

Jesse went to rest with his hand on his breast,
The devil will be upon his knee.
He was born one day in the county of Clay,
And he came from a solitary race.

This song was made by Billy Gashade
As soon as the news did arrive;
He said there was no man with the law in his hand
Who could take Jesse James when alive.

Jesse James was a Rebel in The American Revolution and many people claim he was a old west robin hood robbin the rich and giving to the poor, others a man fighting to bring back th e confederacy and others a simple outlaw. what do you all think?

Jesse James murdered many innocent people. Robert Ford was no 'coward' that killed Jesse when he wasn't looking. Robert was doing soemthing that NEEDED to be done, no matter what. If he hadn't slain jesse then and there, he would have rampagd and killed even more people.

I believe that he was a outlaw that was trying to make a better life for himself and his family.

To supplement the very fine overview that ampmaster provided:

Jesse (1847-1882) and his brother were members, at various intervals, of guerrilla outfits that operated out of Missouri. The only known photo of Jesse during the war was taken about 10 miles away from where I sit currently in Platte City, Missouri. (Just threw that in there as an unimportant tidbit)

Midway through the war, local militia hanged Jesse's stepfather from a barn-beam at his farm near Kearney, MO (about 40 miles away from where I am) to try and make him confess where his other bushwhacking son Frank was hiding. While he was not killed, he was left retarded for the rest of his life. Because of the attack, Jesse joined his brother Frank and took part in the sacking of Lawrence, KS. Jesse and his brother fought under Bloody Bill Anderson and Arch Clement, and became notorious for his participation in the Centralia Massacre, where 22 unarmed Federal troops on furlough were executed.

Jesse's first bank robbery came in 1866 when he and his gang robbed the Clay County Savings Association at Liberty, MO (about 20 miles away) and so a life of robbery was sparked off.

well he was a man from missouri who fought with the confederate gurrillas, his brother frank and their friends and fellow (eventully) bandits the younger brothers also fought with many gurrila units across missouri after the war people had trouble making ends meet and eventully(horrid sp I know) banks were robbed and ex-confed gureillas(sp) were blamed and in the case of the James and Younger Boys at fault but their beloved missouri and the states at large became to dangerous for the james boys and the fled west gathered up a gang and began robbing banks and killing yanks and of course robbing trains and holding up stages (like Wells Fargo) now this is where history get's shaky and legend takes over many people belive he was robbing the yankees as way to keep fighting and to aid poor people of the south a confed robinhood if you will. While other say he was just a bandit eventually he was shot for the reward by his two body guards Rober Ford and His Brother. now history is also strange here as Jesse did two thing he never did before according to accounts (note he was living under the last name Howard with his wife Zee and his kids) he took off his jacket and gun belt, then got a feather duster stood on a chair and began dusting a painting he chould have easilt reached from the floor.

So here's the question: Did Jesse Actually die?
here's the theorys
1. Jesse new it was his time and commited suicide
2. Jesse faked his death

even modern forcenics crews could not get a plausible lead on which of these is the correct theory.

P.S. Robert Ford was arrested for murder and aquitted by the govener he never got his reward. he was killed by a man with a shotgun a few years later in his saloon in colorado

P.P.S some of Jesse Jame's loot may have been found by an amateur treasure hunter a few years back.

I know. So who was Jesse James exactly? I know who he was, but not really who he was.

I have no idea; I've never given him much thought. But I know how much you wanted this thread up, so I'm replying.
