When I think of a hero, I picture someone who is well-known by many, have substantial wealth, and has some virtue that makes people want to be like them. But what about the everday heros that are known by few, have a modest amount of wealth, and are just there when they are needed. How do you recognize the everyday heros? What do you do when you find them, or even better, what do you do when they find you?

In my English class last semester my professor asked us to define what a hero was, and list people who were heroes to us. The answers people came up with were rather extreme, so what a hero is can't really be narrowed down.
In my opinion a hero is someone that is selfless, and who makes an impact on at least one person's life. When we made our lists in class I went with my mom being one of my heroes, as well as my best friend, and one of my high school English teachers. Their impacts on my life are irrelevant to anyone else, but they taught me something that I found to be valuable. The people I listed I supposed would be considered small time heroes.
A guy in our class brought up the point that there are people who have done great things, and yet we can't remember their names. A few years back in New York, an older man waiting for the subway had a seizure and fell on the tracks. A man who saw the event happen leaped out to help the man seconds before transportation came on by. The man who saved the older man was with an ex-marine and was with his children when everything occurred. The man risked his own life to save that of someone he didn't even know, his name is however forgotten.
A hero is not defined by his or her bank account, nor status. The most improbably of situations could produce a hero.

A hero doesn't have to be a person who makes a difference in everyone's lives. All they have to do is touch one heart. I feel that I have many heroes/heroines because many people have touched my life and they have at least tried to do something about it.

My dad is an everyday hero that helped save thousands of lives. He was the commander of Salerno, a base in Afganistan, and he helped the Afganis (?) build homes, hhelped them through a terrible flood after a 10 year drought, and he showed them wa little bit of hope. there are thousands like that, who you will never hear form. They will die without a single mark on their headstone, a chapter in a book, or anything that will go to show their amazing commitment of portions of their lives they gave to serve others.

My hero is a woman. I don't even know her name. But I do know that she spends time with people who have say, 24 hours to live. People who have no family. She spends time with them because no one should die alone.

At my school in our Yearbook committee we were thinking of senior superlatives. We wanted them to be less superficial than senior superlatives tend to be. We had "class activist", "Most Likely to Find a Cure" and many others but my favorite one we created was "Unsung Hero" because you are right.... So many people are everyday heroes just by being a good person. Those people are often overlooked.

Wesley Autrey.
Saved a total stranger in the subway. The teen fell off the platform, Autrey went after him and pinned him between the rails as the train passed overhead. It was a really close call, but they both got out unharmed. Autrey had his two little girls with him.
