Hi ! I just moved here from Ireland and we dont have many volunteer programs or after school programs and I was wondering what's the best way to get involved? I am interested in reading to young kids, hospital programs, fundraising for third world countries and that sort of thing. My home is in Florida and I dont want to give out much info but its in the area code 33019. I was also wondering about a few other things that are new to me, like accelerated programs at school, after school activities like newspaper and cheerleading, and what kinda thing is accepted here. As well as that I dont know any of the tv programs or junk food here, any recommendations? Thanks!

Welcome to America!!! I'm glad to have you join our wonderful country!!! There is so much here that you will enjoy. There are a lot of channels to chose from, depending on if you have Satelite or Cable. There is really no way to tell you what to be looking for because there is such a variety and everyone has different tastes. Personally, I live in Illinois, but I am a Cheerleader and on the School Newspaper and I find both of them to be extremely fun, especially Cheerleading. They will help you to get to know new people, also. I highly recomend Kraft Macaroni and Chese and Easy Mac!!! Plus Ruffles Potato Chips and Ranch Chip Dip!! I just wanted to say how great it is to welcome you to our great nation, you will love it here!!!

If you get Cartoon Network, you might want to give the "Adult Swim" block a shot... that's when they play their better cartoons. It's on fairly late at night, around 11 I think.
Some of the major television networks are ABC, CBS, and NBC. The programming is pretty well-rounded, there are sitcoms, soap operas, dramas, news programs, and sports. If you're into news, MSNBC or CNN might be worth looking into. If you're into pop culture MTV or VH1 might be good bets. The only channel that's devoted to comedy is Comedy Central. There are also various movie channels you can choose to subscribe to. I think the biggest ones are HBO and Showtime... they both have original programming such as the Sopranos, Sex in the City, Q.u.e.e.r as Folk, Oz, etc.
There's a TV rating system, and I'm pretty sure the box shows up in the upper-left corner at the beginning of shows. G means that it's fine for the entire family, PG means that it might not be okay for younger kids, TV 14 means that it's advised that viewers be teenagers or older, and MA means that the show is intended for viewers over the age of 18.
Anyway... I guess my advice is to just check different things out and see what you like.
