Just touching base again on Habitat....The team wanted to remind everyone we did send some of our proceeds from our Katrina effort to Habitat but it's definitely not off the table for another J1C effort sometime in the future.
It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.

I think Habitat is a very worthy cause as well and you know what they say about squeaky wheels so let's get squeaky.

*sigh* You just can't compete with sick kids... *Nominates Habitat for December's J1C.* It seems like a lot of the active YNers (the ones who are doing all of the clicking for this to begin with...) agree that Habitat is a very worthy cause that we would like to donate clicks to. It also got a rather large amount of votes in the past poll...looking at them right now, they are at equal percentages. There really should have been a run-off vote... Is there a second to my nomination? (I know there will be, but we need to do this right...)

Winner was International Hospital for Children. Poll results were obtained up to October 31, 2006. Waiting on getting the counter recalibrated and then we'll be good to go.

hey Hfh is n awesome thing..right now jimmy carter is here building over a 1000 homes for poor people just a few hours from where i stay...they are plain great... but i still think its easier for habitat to get funds than it is for some lesser known organisation...so in that sense its better we give money to an org that cant get good sponsorships...

As much as I want to re-do Invisible Children Inc. because we never reached our goal and I'm the one who proposed for it...I'll vote for Habitat for Humanity...I guess I had my chance and failed.

Thanks Ben!
This world needs failures, someone has to make chicken nuggets and someone has to give the lap dances. If your really smart you know where to get em both at the same time.

Why we should choose Habitat for the next J1C: Habitat is a very respectible and known organization. They are very simple- build inexpensive homes (or fix them up, or even painting something), give them to people who are on a small budget, and provide those people with a good morgage to pay off the house. High Schools, Colleges, Corporations, and ordinary people like you get involved with Habitat on a regular basis--I'm going with my H.S. in 2 weeks to a build site. So I ask you this: Vote for Habitat. Find a Habitat chapter (you can find a local chapter at the Habitat website) or ask your school principal if there is a chapter--if not, create one--its not difficult. Do it--You will be a better person for it.

I don't remember what it was called; I will be sure to ask my church's youth minister about it. Another charity that I think we should consider is Covenant House. They are kind of a bigger organization, they operate all over North America. They are privately funded; they don't accept any government funding. The reason why I care about this organization so much is that their sole focus is on helping teens who are in trouble. They have all sorts of prorams like crisis centers that are open 24/7, tutoring/mentoring programs and transitional housing programs. My high school youth group always donated the proceeds of our charity bake sale to them; we took a tour of their facility, and it was clear how every dolllar helps. More information can be found at their website covenanthouse.org.
