...might as well be non-existant. I say this as a member of the YAB.

THE PROBLEMS:
1. We haven't had a meeting since the end of March.
2. At this meeting, out of the 15 members, there were 4 of us who actually called in.
3. We are asked to provide feedback on decisions that had already been made for the site.
4. The YAB "about" page was never updated to reflect the changes to board membership that were made in November.

THE DISCLAIMER:
I don't WANT to get rid of the youth advisory board. I think having a panel of YNers to help make decisions that affect all of the site members is crucial to the success of the site.

MEAGAN'S PROPOSED SOLUTION:
1. Revamp the membership of the YAB to include individuals who are willing to give up a half hour every month to call in to meetings. Also, make sure these members are actually still involved regularly with YN, as many of them are not.
2. Make YN staff understand the importance of the YAB and have them make it a priority.
3. Give the members actual decisions to make in order to make them feel as though their involvement is actually worthwhile.

You're not the greatest on getting back to us, which doesn't bode as a good sign for the YAB, but I thought I'd ask anyways:

Why is there an age limit? What about those 15 year olds who are more mature or have amazing ideas about the site? Any reason for not including them?

Also, why no time minimum for people on the site? I try not to have anything against new members, but I think you need to be on the site for at least 5 or 6 months--- and actually have signed in at various intervals throughout-- to really know a site, to know it's members, it's conflicts, how it works, etc. It just really bothers me that you have an age limit but not a minimum membership.

I was thinking about that as well, Khary, but I also wonder about the people who don't have a major. What do they do?

Because I am curious:
Why does occupation/student concentration matter?

Actually, under requirements, why isn't there a minimum time as a member of YN on there?
I can see a possible rationale for the concentration/occupation question. Individuals studying certain subjects would likely possess knowledge and skills that may make them well-suited for one committee but not necessarily another; for instance, a business/management/finance/etc major might be a valuable member of the Partnerships Committee, but he/she may not have had a chance to develop a skillset suited towards working on the Design Committee. Likewise, a PoliSci/Psychology/etc major might have some unique insights to contribute to the Outreach Committee, but he/she might not be the greatest at distinguishing good corporate sponsors from bad.

I don't think scheduled meetings once a week are completely unreasonable, but expecting full attendance to them would be. My guess is if there was renewed enthusiasm about it, they could do a lot better than 1 of 15.

And I actually like the age restriction; 16-24 strikes me personally as about the perfect age group I'd want in control of the YAB.

I'm thinking about submitting an application. Since I didn't see it anywhere: is there a cutoff date when they stop accepting applications?

YAB meetings have been via conference call. I don't know if they are planning to change this or not.

So anyone can join? Are these meetings held in the yn chat or what? I'd show up if it wasn't once a week. I could do bi monthly or once a month.

Meagan has a concern about the revamped YAB: (She has an opinion on everything; just try to tell me you weren't expecting this...Wink)

I found out from Sara that the last YAB meeting (that I wasn't able to attend, so I e-mailed in my feedback) had only one member call in...out of 15.

I don't know if I'm missing something, but I don't see how the YAB will be able to attract the dedicated YNers they are looking for by adding an extra 4 meetings a month and limiting the age scope to 16-24.

I personally don't know that I'm able to reapply, even though I really like giving feedback on new things that happen on the site. Especially when you consider that a good portion of the age slot are college-aged, I don't think it's reasonable to expect scheduled meetings once a week.

Like I said though, maybe it's just me. Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

If you're not modding, and another mod isn't modding, then who will mod?

The criteria for mods may have to be changed as well...
