true but theres more to it than that prisons were built to accomplish four goals 1) to serperate criminals from society 2) punish criminal behavior 3) deter criminal behavior and 4) rehabilatate criminals. Okay goals one and two work becasue we are sepreating the criminals from society and prisons are pretty nasty places. . 3 and four are not accomplished. inmates who return to society often brag about their prison experinces to regain there confidence, prisons are closed off from society so the public knows virtually nothing about them. For prison to truly be deterant then the very unpleasent aspets of prison needs to brought into the light of the public. this has been done on some levels . Prisoners have been brought to highscholls to tell stundents about the horrors of prison life. and of course there's rehabilation. Let me ask you a question when you around bad people you generally tend to start acting like your peers right ? yes of course . then why are we still putting criminals in with other criminals ???!!! then of course when criminals get out can they find legitmate work with the label "ex- con" ? No it is very hard to do so. so in most cases they return to crime. The FBI says that 67% of all relased criminals commit another new crime in three years of being released. These are only some of the reasons of why the system does not work. Sorry i went on and on about that . But do i know what to do to fix it ? No... that would be too easy ...
That might not make any sense but right now I'm too tired to explain it to you or to care .......

they don't work because when you send criminals to prisons and treat them like animals they leave with an animal mentality. by the time they make their return into society they hardly know right from wrong anymore.

there are other alternatives to our prison system. Instead of just getting rid of it all together we could change it or modify it. Although i don't know were to startso maybe i should just shut up ? right ....

Yeah, from what you've described, I believe it was meant that the way prisons are set up is laughable. And I don't mean funny laughable. I'm talking pitiful laughable. Our nation's prison system is insanely pitiful. However, it would cost lots of money to renovate all of them. Money that our leaders are currently spending on another "joke" (the war). However, the alternative to prisons is either letting every single criminal off scot-free, or killing them all. Neither of those sound...appealing.
The more you know, the less you don't know.
