Iran to hang teenage girl attacked by rapists Sat.

07 Jan 2006

Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Jan. 07 – An Iranian court has sentenced a teenage rape victim to death by hanging after she weepingly confessed that she had unintentionally killed a man who had tried to rape both her and her niece.

The state-run daily Etemaad reported on Saturday that 18-year-old Nazanin confessed to stabbing one of three men who had attacked the pair along with their boyfriends while they were spending some time in a park west of the Iranian capital in March 2005.

Nazanin, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, said that after the three men started to throw stones at them, the two girls’ boyfriends quickly escaped on their motorbikes leaving the pair helpless.

She described how the three men pushed her and her 16-year-old niece Somayeh onto the ground and tried to rape them, and said that she took out a knife from her pocket and stabbed one of the men in the hand.

As the girls tried to escape, the men once again attacked them, and at this point, Nazanin said, she stabbed one of the men in the chest. The teenage girl, however, broke down in tears in court as she explained that she had no intention of killing the man but was merely defending herself and her younger niece from rape, the report said.

The court, however, issued on Tuesday a sentence for Nazanin to be hanged to death.

Last week, a court in the city of Rasht, northern Iran, sentenced Delara Darabi to death by hanging charged with murder when she was 17 years old. Darabi has denied the charges.

In August 2004, Iran’s Islamic penal system sentenced a 16-year-old girl, Atefeh Rajabi, to death after a sham trial, in which she was accused of committing “acts incompatible with chastity”.

The teenage victim had no access to a lawyer at any stage and efforts by her family to retain one were to no avail. Atefeh personally defended herself and told the religious judge that he should punish those who force women into adultery, not the victims. She was eventually hanged in public in the northern town of Neka.

It's their beliefs. As bad as we may think they could be, we can't do anything about it. It's hard for many of us to get our minds around what we think, and get into what they think.

Leviticus 20:10
" 'If a man commits adultery with another man's wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.

Woo, found a few sources. From Sora AlNoor (024.002):
quote:
The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge ye each one of them (with) a hundred stripes. And let not pity for the twain withhold you from obedience to Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment.
(So yeah, both men and women are punished equally)

As for the killing = death penalty policy, this was the best thing I could find to counter that; you can take life for a just cause - I think self-defense would fall under that):
Sora AlIsra (017.033):
quote:
Nor take life - which Allah has made sacred - except for just cause. And if anyone is slain wrongfully, we have given his heir authority...

And there's nothing in the Qu'ran about rape that I could find, but here's a Hadith from the prophet. It's from one of the two only completely trusted sources for quotations from the prophet, Sahih Bukhari:
quote:
Allah's Apostle said, "Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. People asked, "O Allah's Apostle! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?" The Prophet said, "By preventing him from oppressing others."

And a link from Submission.org about rape in Islam. They get a bit off topic, talking about prostitution and adultery but if you scroll down there's some stuff worth reading.

My point was that this was not justified by Islam, this is just Iran's legal system. It may be loosely based on Islam, but the hanging of this girl for defending herself is not applying Islamic law, it's applying Iranian law. And Iranian law is messed up.

Hmm, I thought I read somewhere that women could be stoned for adultery while the men got off free. Maybe it was somewhere in the biblical Old Testament. I don't quite remember, but I do remember something about it.

If you can prove me wrong, great. I can't find a source, either, though.

And murder, no matter what kind, is punishable by death. No questions asked.

That is NOT true. Both men and women are punished for adultery in Islam - being male doesn't mean you get away with it. And yeah, murder is punishable by death but it's not a no questions asked policy, if someone attacks you you're not supposed to just stand there and let them. I'm gonna find a source and get back to you - This girl being hanged is not justified in Islam.

1) i hope that's really not that guy's actual profile/feelings..!
2) the iranian government has now officially enraged me! why even put the 2 women on trial? why not just hang them on the spot? you can see from this story (if it wasn't twisted) that the court gave them no way to defend themselves. those rapists deserved to die. weren't the girls just saving the court time and money? iran needs some help up in hizzere!!!

and the profile below says he doesn't like emo peoples..? Frown i be emo... Mad grrr....

Don't pay attention to this inept loser. Look at his profile:

Favorite Book: 1984, The Communist Manifesto

Favorite Song: Time - Pink Floyd

My Hero(s) Hitler, Stalin, Moussolini, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, Vlad the Implaer

My philosophy: "Death solves all problems. No man, no problem."

People remember me most by: Cruelty, assholism

I'm outraged by: Emo, weak, whiny, and bitchy people.

If I could solve one world problem it would be: How to get more people to commit suicide

The one thing I want to do before I die is: Commit genocide.

Other things on my mind are ... Death, drugs, alcohol, sex.

I certainly saw it as an obviously sarcastic comment.

Lol, I know. That comment wasn't directed at you. It was directed at the thread in general.

Pfft. Say what you want about America, but that wouldn't happen here with the country's knowledge. And I'm with amp. If I saw or experienced rape, you can bet your ass I'd kill 'em as well.

And what can we do? There isn't much. But we should never forget the 100 rule. For every one letter a Senator receives, they assume there are 100 more who feel the same way. 10 letters = 1,000 voices spoken for, and so on. And they are our closest link to national/global change that we have at this point.

Oh, yes, but if the US is the world police and therefore attempting to change everyone's life and government, and that is justified, then the point becomes invalid.

(This goes to Iraq war supporters).
