It was stated in the article that they noticed it when they built it, but they didn't pay much attention to it since it wasn't visible from the ground. This all was spurred by Google Earth and the widely available aerial photography that is available through it.

Awkward. I hope they don't go through the trouble to change it, though. People shouldn't be offended by a mistake that can only be seen from the air. The swastika is a symbol for more than just Nazism, you know. Having all this stigma around it makes people forget what it originally meant. Read.

Jesu Christo what about the 8 million gypsies, invalids, blacks and homosexuals that also were murdered in the camps? what about the 20 million russians (mixed soldiers/civilians) that got to go take showers too? over 30 million people died in the holocaust and yet people can only mention 6 million of the deaths
