I just paid $2.489 a gallon!!! I am so phyched because once I actually find a car that is worth buying, then I have to pay for all the gas I use...and I commute a half hour each way to school Mon-Fri...That puts me at approximately 50 miles each day just for classes!

If Rita causes the Texas Gulf Coast oil production to shut down, it won't be a matter of how much gas is. It'll be a matter of even finding gas.

That's a lot scarier than *ooo* three bucks a gallon.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Virginia Beach, Va. where I live is $2.98-3.09. That's relatively low compared to some states with a gallon of regular costing four dollars.

What ever happened to gas being a 1.83 a gallon?(In Virginia anyway)

I invite everybody who hasn't already done so to check out these links:

$3 per gallon is nothing to go into a tizzy about. It is a mere precursor, probably to another precursor..... to an inevitable, slow (or fast? Much of the details will be unpredictable) worldwide economic meltdown that will, most likely, forever put an end to industrial society in due time.

Only gas prices are going to be hit first, though in the long run what we're going to see is a huge blow to modern agriculture(!) as well as other major energy-consumptive processes such as industry, which would put an effective end to consumerist lifestyles. There are other ways to generate electricity, but none of them could come anywhere CLOSE to producing a substantial fraction of what petroleum provides.

Luckily, while I am 19, I do not own or drive a car, as my lifestyle does not depend on it.

exactly, we pray everyday for 3 dollar a gallon gas here.

Mostly because of taxes, though. We're lucky because gas isn't taxed, not because of the set price. Oh, and I found the quote:

The retail price, however, has hung on to a much bigger gain, up 16%, or 42 cents, at $3.018 a gallon since Katrina, off just 1.3% from its peak.

Ehhh so it was 16%; still!

Mmm... But according to certain economic experts, the prices do not reflect the actual price for the tycoons. Instead, they're reaping a whole lot of money off the American people because Americans thought the Hurricane did something terrible to the market (which it did, but only temporarily) and there is a certain extra percent profit the oil companies are still making (I believe the website said either seventeen or seventy) [either way it's more than it should be] a substantial profit compared to what they were making.

Gas in Maine was about $2.05 before the hurricane hit.
Right after it hit, it reached up to about $3.60.
Now it's luckily down to about $2.50.

I'm glad it's so low Roll Eyes

Risk, what's this about some sort of small, grassroots riot going on recently over there?
