At a school in Red Lake, Minnesota, ten people died in a school shooting this afternoon. After shooting his grandparents and taking at least two of his grandfather's firearms to school, Jeff Weise, 16, killed five students, a teacher, a security guard, and after exchanging fire with police officers, himself. There were many others injured, and of course there was a massive amount of sadness in the community, this being the worst school shooting since 35 students were shot (12 of whom died) at Columbine High in 1999. So what causes school shootings, and how can we stop them from happening? Is it possible to point the finger at guns, influential music, or bullying, or is it something more nebulous? Theories and other comments welcome. Here's an article on the shooting, and here's a map with descriptions of other examples of school violence in recent years.

I thought of this really frightening thing. What if some phycopathic kid got a gang together, and a bunch of machine guns, pulled the fire alarm, and when everyone was outside, just rained bullets on them? It would be a perfect strategy...
Its kind of frightening hearing you have this whole thing planned out....haha. just kidding. But yes, that is frightening to think that that could happen.

That might not make any sense but right now I'm too tired to explain it to you or to care .......
still, ppl are ignoring the root of the problem. its not gun control, depression etx=c. its that this kid was treated like crap by his classmates & that caused his depression. ppl need to pay attention to this or its going to keep happening.

I'm not justifying what the tabliods say (I never said that). I only said that tabliods are going to bend the truth to make a better story...

If its a tabloid, then of course theyre going to make ammuptions, (which 99.9& arent true) because it makes a better story. Just because people make fun of you doesnt mean its right to shoot and kill people. And then to kill yourself (and your grandparents which is worse) makes you a coward above it all.

I'm wondering the same thing as iceland. Canada is not only dark and dreary much of the winter, they also have very high alchohol and tobacco taxes... Oh wait, I know why they don't have as many problems, extremely liberal marijuana laws. Nuff said.

Yeah, I think you're right north. Minnesota has a pretty high serial killer percentage compared to other states, some of the other northern ones too. But then there's Canada...

This past week's events in Minnesota were terrible. I heard the shooting was the worst since columbine (spelling?). It is horrible to see this type of thing happen in a high school. My school upgraded the security last summer and to tell you the truth, I do not feel safe. Something like what happened could happen anywhere. (G-d forbid) That is the scariest part. I am worried. I am scared. I hope that something like what happened, never occurs again.

Thanks Celtic. I said 'I WOULD IF', not 'I WILL', or 'I AM.' No, I am not going to shoot anyone. And I never will, unless in self defense. There. -Sunset
Jesus....people kill. People want to kill. That's a fact. Not much we can do about it. Except try to know who's actually going to take action in such desire.

doesn't it usually manisfest itself by torturing animals, though
It can, but torturing animals can be seen as a precursor for a rampage like that. If you torture animals, you're demonstrating that you either don't know or don't care that you're causing the animal pain; so you'd probably be on the same level with human pain.
I knew that, but I thought that it took longer, like, until a person is an adult to make the switch from animals to people.

OK, people are going to hate me for this, but look at where he lived: Minnesota. All phsycopathic killers were born in Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin or Wyoming.
actually, there is some truth to that. All these states are in the north, where it gets very dark and cold, not to mention snowy, for six months of the year. This can cause cronic depression. I get depressed in the winters, and I live in Jersey. It's snowing now.
