Why is it that we started celebrating MLK's birthday before we started celebrating veterans day? Or am I the only one that could really care less about MLK's B-day

OK, What exactly do you have against the man? You have stated you don't like the guy, and he's not a great person, but never said why.

I agree with the above statement and with iamastar as well. Please state your reasons.

The only question here really is if you don't give a flyin' hoot about the man, than why is it you devoted a whole thread on someone you don't care about?

im just saying that mlk was not the great, grand and wonderful person that the media has portrayed him to be. it just seems that everyone is all happy and joyus about mlk day when im sure there were plenty of other black americans that could easily be cited for their accomplishments that were not Pieces of Sh*t. the people of this country are too liberal and doesnt appreciate nor care about the real things that have shaped this country into what it is.

My brother has been to Iraq two or three times now. He was shot in the face by a sniper and almost died. I think I would know a bit about appreciation for what the vets and service men have done and are doing for this country. Still I don't see what the big deal is about which came first.

im not talking about it chronologically, im saying figurativly this country seems to care more about the celebration of MLK day than that of veterans day. but then again liberals really dont care about the vets and servicemen

Veterans Day is an American holiday for honoring war veterans. It is celebrated on the same day as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. It is both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states. All major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice. Armistice Day was first commemorated in the United States by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, and 30 states made it a legal holiday. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 inviting all Americans to observe the day and made it a legal holiday nationwide in 1938.
The holiday has been observed annually on November 11 since that date - first as Armistice Day, later as Veterans Day. When holidays in the United States, with the exception of New Year's Day, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Independence Day were moved to Mondays to create long holiday weekends, the celebration was moved to the fourth Monday of October. However, after protests by veterans groups it was moved back to November 11th in an effort to make the holiday more important. Unfortunately for those groups, the result was the opposite. Even though it is a federal and state holiday, it is formally observed in most parts of the United States only by government offices and banks. Most schools and almost all businesses stay open on regular schedules. As a result, most public transit systems are on regular schedules. Most businesses cite the holiday's proximity to Thanksgiving (when many businesses close for a four-day weekend) as the main reason for staying open on Veterans Day; but most schools and businesses also stay open on Columbus Day, a full month earlier.
On November 11, 1953, the citizens of Emporia, Kansas staged a Veterans Day observance in lieu of an Armistice Day remembrance. Congressman Ed Rees of Emporia, Kansas subsequently introduced legislation in the United States House of Representatives to officially change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day [1]. Following a letter-writing campaign to secure the support of all state governors in the observance of this new holiday, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day (enacted June 1, 1954), to honor those who served.

quote:

Martin Luther King Day was founded as a holiday promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations. [2] After King's death in 1968, Rep. John Conyers introduced a bill in Congress to make King's birthday a national holiday, highlighting King's activism on behalf of trade unionists. Unions did most of the promotion for the holiday throughout the 1970s. In 1976, trade unionists helped to elect Jimmy Carter, who endorsed the King Day bill. After that endorsement, union influence in the King holiday campaign declined, and the King Center turned to support from the corporate community and the general public. The success of this strategy was cemented when musician Stevie Wonder released the single "Happy Birthday" to popularize the campaign in 1980 and hosted the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981. 6 million signatures were collected for a petition to Congress to pass the law, termed by a 2006 The Nation article as "...the largest petition in favor of an issue in US history." [3]
Opposition to the bill was led by Senator Jesse Helms, who questioned whether King was important enough to receive such an honor. He was also critical of King's opposition to the Vietnam War and accused King of having Communist connections.
President Ronald Reagan was also opposed to the holiday. He relented in his opposition only after Congress passed the King Day Bill with an overwhelming, veto-proof majority (338 to 90 in the House of Representatives and 78 to 22 in the Senate).
At the White House Rose Garden on November 2, 1983, Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday to honor King. It was observed for the first time on January 20, 1986.
On January 17, 2000, for the first time, Martin Luther King Day was officially observed in all 50 U.S. states.[4] The day is marked by demonstrations for peace, social justice and racial and class equality, as well as a national day of volunteer community service.
On January 16, 2006 Greenville County, South Carolina was the last county in the U.S. to officially adopt Martin Luther King Day as a paid holiday.

So what are you on about, exactly? If you're talking about the dates on which each was created, your information is incorrect, and if you're complaining about the chronology in terms of the calendar year, you're a straight up fuckwit.

ok youthvoice, your "great man" was also a womanizer. but hey, he defended our nations freedom way more than the brave men and women that give and gave their lives for our freedom. so naturally he deserves a holiday before them right?

Because he was a great man. That's it.

You mean to say couldn't care less.

I don't care about either holiday. All I know is that I get holiday pay if I work them.
