I'm Australian, so the gun ownership debate is one I sort of need clarified.

I understand the Second Amendment protects a citizen's rights to bear arms...

Why is there such great objection to ending or overruling the right to gun ownership?

It seems a ridiculously unnecessary and superficial right in the face of freedom of speech, and social violence.

Actually, the second amendment means that ordinary citizens can form armed militias if they want. It has to do with the revolution, not so much the right to bear arms as it's interpreted today.
I live in a city where some kids can't play in their front yard without having to worry about drive bys. Anyone who is against gun control can go to those neighborhoods and let their kids live like that.

Don't feel pressured to rebut right away, I'd understand if you were on "walkabout" or you were down at your pub "wrastlin" crocodiles and "getting the wobbly boot."
I don't want to hear that you were too busy oppressing the aboriginal peoples or "recivilizing" their "half-breed" kids!

its because they have very little intelligence and shooting people is the only way they know how to do things (eg. invading Iraq)

Ouch! way to stereotype, did you type that before tossing a few shrimp on the barbie or after you played boomerang w/your pet dingo?

i dont understand why people in the cities and towns need to own a weapon. if your in the country it is a different story, but its not like your going to be attacked by a wild animal in the streets on Melbourne of Sydney
i'm also Australian btw

in america we have a lot of really dumb people who care more about their right to own a weapon rather than the safety of others. these people are called rednecks and make up roughly 50% of the US, which is why Bush got into office and they are also the reason why america is the fattest country.

they can't understand that a gun is a fool's weapon, they see their rifle as a "god-given" right. barbarians.
