Well, they mentioned addiction... I personally am not an expert on such things.

I think this would be good for children who have had very traumatic experiences... Give them a chance to have normal life rather than live with fear, shame and regret.

A notable use that the article left out was that it could be used in criminal cases - got a hardened psychopath you need to turn into an ordinary human being? ZIP his memory and then teach him how to be a good citizen. Not that I'm advocating this in all criminal cases, but in certain cases, I think it could be an incredibly effective punishment and treatment combined.

And I did just have one thought about addiction - isn't that supposed to be largely biological? as in, you'd just forget what drugs you were addicted to, but would still feel the strain of addiction and the effects of detoxing etc.?

But this could be useful for people who have addiction problems.

Personally I think that all memories should be kept and not gotten rid of. I mean even if they aren't so great they're still part of what makes you you.
