It is unbelievable how many people are dead. Is there some way these deaths could have been avoided? I know scientists are monitoring the plate movements near the Pac. ocean, but why not the Inidan Ocean?

Go to USAID's Website. They can tell you how to help.

If you wanted to help out and send food or other supplies over to those countries, how would you go about doing it?

Bushsupporter, it amazes me how easily you can turn a natural disaster into something anti-democrat. Where does this thread mention the stingyness of the US? Personally, I have nothing against the US and believe it to be the greatest country in the world.

I would like to say a few words on the hypocracy of the world community. First, the democrats would have us beleive that we are hated in all parts of the world except here in our own country. If this is true the world disgusts me by calling us stingy. You cannot hate us and everything that we stand for and all that we beleive and expect us to be there for you when you need us. You cannot have it both ways. Also, there were cries to the media in Sri Lanka, "Tell the world, where is America?" This leads me to believe one of two things - that the world doesn't hate us as the liberals and America-haters say, but that we are indeed respects us - OR - the world does hate us but only wants us to come when they think they need help, other than that we are "The Great Satan." Well, I say that if we are indeed the "Great Satan" then we wouldn't give any money to the greedy monarchies who have squandered their money on palaces and women rather than a sufficient warning system for their people. If I could give one message to the world scommunity, it would be, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you."

While we are on the subject of aid. France and Russia haven't given any money Click Here. I guess they really aren't that concerned about humanitarian efforts. I guess there's no oil in Sri Lanka.

I'm waiting for that fault along the Jaun de Fuca plate up near Seattle to go. It's supposed to be absolutely massive. I've heard estimates up to 10.0 And it happens every 300 years of so. Last time the fault moved? Sometime in the early 1700's.

Oh man, that would really not be cool. I live only 66 miles away from Seattle.

Major activity ? Are you talking about the single 4.3 in northern Cali this morning ?
Aside from that, the other quakes were of neglible size and are almost certainly entirely unrelated to the sumatran earthquake.
As for celtic and freedom, stop whining about me caring for specifics. We're not discussing english or philosophy here; facts exist and theres no point in providing the wrong ones...

Before, i used to believe disasters just come and go, but ever since that 9/11 incident, it got me thinking that maybe it is God's wrath or something... like, He is trying to tell us that many people are violent already and refusing to believe in Him that is why all this stuff happens..... I also believe in scientists and stuff, but i am more inclined to believe that somehow, all these disasters are not merely the work of nature.

...Then you realize that these natural disasters have been going on on a fairly regular basis for all of geologic time. This, as devestating as it is, is not out of the ordinary on the grand scale of things.

We havent seen the last of the quakes - We still get after shocks . Thing is they knew about the earthquake three hours before we felt the aftershocks in India . We could have done something but this is a first for us . I dont know . Doesnt seem right but outright blaming somebody-I dont know.

Well, I'm sorry mazar. Next time...

Maybe not for the same reasons... But hey, it was all caused by the same earthquake; not my fault if all the sources are saying different things about the other facts, it's the only definite fact. I mean, even the earthquake is being disputed; "Was it 8.6? 9.0?" And on and on and on....

yes, i have heard of that terrible disaster and i am so glad it didnt hit the Philippines. I think that something like this could happen without anyone noticing it, even the most powerful technology couldnt be able to help scientists and all those other experts... I mean, look at what happened to Sept. 11?? It was really unexpected, so i guess sometimes, we really cannot expect disasters....

I also hope those victims would get really good help from other countries. Smile

First, Mazar, quit being anal.

Secondly:

There's really not to many things we can do to predict exactly when an earthquake will strike, just a general "something is coming soon" sort of thing. These warning systems that you hear about warn people about the wave AFTER the event has occured. And like someone mentioned, these areas are third world, there's little you can do to warn everyone.

quote:
It is unbelievable how many people are dead.

There were a few earthquakes in Iran a while ago. Killed over 40,000 people. These things tend to suck in the third world.

It was a 9.0 off the coast of Sumatra. You're already online, its not that hard to look things up before posting incorrect information...

There was a huge earthquake (I think it was yesterday) in a Southeastern Asia country. It started with an "S"... Anyway, I guess it was 8.6--one of the greatest ever recorded.
