I almost applied to Youth Court a few months ago, but I don't have nearly enough time for it.

i agree nicoley,
i have been in teen court for about a year and i was a jury member for a couple of months and became a defense attorney so yeah. i personally dont like that rule of x criminals deciding case becuase if they got a bad punishment then they want them to get it. I was a jury member a few days ago and i finall realized somethings that the jury have to work on like oppinions and things like that b/c in our court deliberation everyone has to agree or it dont go through so some places are different. I will make a suggestion try and make more awareness of the program and get more poeple in from school or the community not people who have been in trouble and jutst riding out thier sentnce and if u want here is my e-mail address if you wanna e-mail me cuz i can maybe help with some suggestions.

I realize no one has posted anything on this thread for quite some time, but I just joined Teen Court the other week, so I thought I'd share my thoughts: It was definitely not what I expected, not nearly as formal or serious as I originally presumed. As a jury member, I was mainly supposed to ask the defense a bunch of questions. I asked one boy if he was aware of the negative effects smoking could cause to his health. Bad question. He immediately got defensive and started talking back to me as if I were stupid for asking that question. When we went in the back room to deliberate, I was flabbergasted to see that my fellow jurors assigned his punishment based on how cute he/she was. Additionally, I was surprised to learn that the other jurors were only in the program because they needed hours for crimes they committed. Personally, if I was ever the defense, I would never want my punishment decided on by a group of ex-criminals who base the consequences of my actions on the way that I look. It was all just too...weird, I guess. But, on the positive side, it's an easy way to get your SSL hours and meet some friends... Or criminals.

Indiana has it too, and yes I am involved. It's a really good experience and it is too bad that not more places have it.

I've considered getting involved with this, but I'm just like... weirded out by the idea of sentencing someone to do all this community service when I'm not sure I even agree with all the laws in place. What do you think?

My town has talked about getting one of these... Nothing happened as a result, but I'm going to bring it up again... Because I think it would be great!
