The Miracle League is a program for disabled children (cognitively as well as physically) that want to play baseball, but can't handle the regular leagues. This is open to ALL disabled kids-- they have a rubber field, so it's wheelchair accessible, and flat "dug-outs". It's an amazing program, and the kids really love it.
Here's where the volunteering comes in: Each kid gets a Buddy. Buddies hang out with the kids in the dug-out, run around the bases with them, and help them hit the ball if neccessary (or push their wheelchair). They also become friends to the kids.
This is really important to the kids at Miracle League. I've been involved in it for two years (this will be my third) and I've loved it every time. But, if you want to do this, you should be ready to commit. The kids are looking for someone they can trust and who will support them. Who knows what they are or are not getting at home. If you can't be there almost every game for that kid's team, don't bother.
