I just got cast as a Roman Soldier in our local broadway level play "The Thorn" so in honor of my legion this is to discuss the warriors of rome and I do need the info I want to be as authentic as possible.

Eat! Fight! Sleep! Repeat!

Actually for roman soldiers it was more like Eat,Fight,Sex,Sleep,Repeat. Romans in general somehow considered sex an art. Also they had vomitoriums for when they got full while eating and wanted to eat more before the next course.

Some general facts:

A roman soldier had it really rough. They often went unpaid for months and were promised a portion of "booty" if the legion came across it.
But as it was, they very rarely came across any real treasure so the soldier went unpaid. Their food consisted of bread which was made without yeast, so it was terrible in the best sense. Sometimes they would eat veggies, if there were any they could find. And meat was so rare to eat, they disliked having to eat it. Everywhere they went they had to march, then at night they had to set up an elaborate camp. When they were marching they had to carry heavy loads of camp items, (pans, tent materials, rations for the day, weapons, etc) so they weren't always in the best mood. As you can see, the average roman soldier wasn't the happiest one.
