Every one knows of King Arthur and His Knight of the round table but the question many historians ask is "was he real" that is what I ask here was Arthur real? Did Camelot exist? or is it all one of the grandest fairy tales of all times?

I took a year-long class on the history of england and we learned that it was most likely that King Arthur as we know him was not real. A lot of the legends about him (such as his and guinevere's bones being buried beneath a certain church) were fabricated by those churches institutions to gain more publicity/ money. Also, most arthurian legends didnt even pop up anywhere in writing until several hundred years after he was supposed to have lived, which is a big pointer that he was probably never really alive. however, i do really like the keira knightley movie about him, and thought that it sounded pretty plausible. on a side note has anyone read, "the mists of avalon", or either of the other books in that trilogy? they were absolutely amazing.

I'd like to believe it was true, only because that would be so amazing. To think that such an order existed is really fascinating. I've always been interested in King Arthur. Although I heard the most recent movie made about him was pretty bad.

Other books on King Arthur include, The Once and Future King by T.H. White and Morte d'Arthur by Alfred Lord Tennyson. They are very good, particulaly The Once and Future King.

I do belive that King Arthur is a legend, meaning that in my opinion he was real but all the stories that have been told about him were exagerated over time. On the subject of King Arthur. I really want to read the book Stienbeck wrote about all his legends. Has anyone read it? Is it any good?

King Arthur was real. He just wasn't as great as everyone thinks. He was an average guy. On another note, this thread makes me think of MP's The Holy Grail. Good movie. My friend got to watch it for his English class.

but because it it's the only credible evidence, it is the most likely candidate. Other people have sited Camelot at Glastonbury and Cornwall. Camelot, I remind you all, was fabricated out of the celtic words "cam" and "lo" (which I don't remember what means) in the mid fourteenth century by a french poet.

Atûr was a celtic cheiftain in Wales, who managed to win nine battles against the saxons. He was based at Camelard hill fortress. That's all we know about the man Arthur.

And it's got Keira Knightly. An added bonus. I'll definitely check it out. I also need to see "Quest For Fire," apparently, and purchase Mel Brooks' "History of the World Part I." That's a really good theory. Hm. I'll just add that to my list of things that I'd like to check out when my time machine gets built.
