This is a rather broad topic obviously, but I'd like to focus more on their extinction. Were they killed off by Sapiens Sapiens, or did their large cranial capacity make childbirth hard on the child and the mother? There are obviously more theories, but these are just thought provoking questions. I've talked to another YNer about this, but I just thought I'd get a wider opinion.

Forgot about that, green During the end of the Pleiscine, the climate became staggeringly warmer. Where once Europe was covered with tundras and steppes (Like Mongolia) now dense forests and fertile champaine districts grew on the loess left from the grinding rocks of the receading glaciers. The Neanderthal was a hunter of the megafauna. The megafauna began to dissapear in Europe, obviously, and the neanderthal became restricted to river gorges and high hills, where the tundra grasses still grew, and there were still a few megafauna. Once the large beasts disappear, the neanderthal also disappears. They might have been unable to adapt to new conditions, for at this time, cro-magnons became fishers, gatherers, and hunted smaller beasts.

quote: I've never heard any evidence for neanderthal cerimonial burials most were our ancestors
I think there was some site where Neandertals had buried a person and put a rock at the head in the ground. It was a bit more complex than that, I believe. There was more evidence for it, but its been years since I looked into it. What about climate theories? Didn't you have one on that, North?

quote: Neadertals weren't any less adapted in that aspect.
But they didn't advance. Neanderthal tools remain the same for millions of years, while cro-magnons start out with relatively simple tools five million years ago, and today we have cell phones and electric turkey cutters. In this same period, the neanderthals changed little. As for the birthing issue, this kept the population small. That was not a problem while they were alone in the world, without any competition, but once they came into contact with a quickly reproducing croup, they were pushed out of their territory. quote: 1. Neanderthals as we have seen them had no real spiritualism this is a central part of modern human life.

Hmm... I wouldn't doubt that Cro-Magnons had a large part in the extinction of Neanderthals. However, there is speculation that Cro-Magnon hunting parties (of men, mind you) would sometimes use female Neanderthals and there are records of various interspecial breeding from South America (when I used to watch the Discovery channel...). Neaderthals probably died off because they could not only not fight for territory effectively, but also because they were less adaptable.
