What do you guys make of Atlantis? Any idea as to the location or whether it even existed in the first place?

I personally subscribe to the idea that it was probably loosely based on a real event that happened to a city that was at least somewhat impressive for the time. Also, I think Plato was using it as a metaphor, as has been pointed out, for a perfect society. Even he may have been influenced by the legend of an actual place that disappeared, though...

I also wrote a research paper about Atlantis and where it may have been located. I believe that the main portion of Atlantis was in the Caribbean Sea. There are lots of local tribal myths around the area about a race of people who fled from there land to escape a devastating tidal wave created by an asteroid/meteor that hit the Atlantic Ocean. Just the possibility of the existence makes my heart flutter.

I don't believe in Atlantis. I believe (like the Trojan War) it was a real event that has been made into legend. As north said, it was the Island of Thera.

Besides, my favorite ancient natural disaster is Mt. Vesuvius.

The Island of Thera erupted and the city on it's mount is Atlantis.
