This happened a while back, so I don't know if there was already a thread about this, but...

An episode of Postcards From Buster (a kids show) was cancelled because Buster went to visit a kid with lesbian parents. The station claims it was because this kind of stuff is inappropriate for children. Several people were upset about this, but others thought it was justified.

In my opinion, it was wrong. There are gay people in the world and there's nothing wrong with it. The show was not inappropriate and they had no right to cancel that episode because there were lesbians on it.

Anyways, how do you feel about this?

taking a show off of TV doesn't send the message to children you are claiming it does. Plus they aired the controversial episode anyway and here is a quote from this article.

"WGBH, which produces the show says it will still air the episode despite Spelling's threat to gut its funds, and has offered it to any station willing to defy the Education Department."

You know?

Find another great show to watch? It's a children's program..Here, why don't you tell a child with gay or lesbian parents that they're whole family is just an unacceptable part of society. How's a child in that envoironment every going to learn that he or she is normal, and she will not be outcasted by the bible beaters of this nation, who infact, are too worked up on THEM not their religion being right to even take the time to have some compassion for others different than them? Isn't that what religion is about, forgivness and compassion?

I wouldn't say it is inappropriate to get upset, but I do feel that it is useless.

By that reasoning, is it ever appropriate to get upset about any network's decision?

here's the thing. The people who canceled the show have every right to do so because it is their show. Instead of being upset that it was canceled for a bad reason just accept that it is canceled and find another really terrific show to watch.

I didn't know about that. Even though I don't think they were right it does not surprise me at all.

That's so rediculous!

So how about the kids with gay parents watching this? Anyone ever thing about them, it's not like there's about 5 kids in the world with gay or lesbian parents. That's just leaving the kids with lesbian parents " Why am I the only child with a famil like mine". It dosen't hurt anyone or anything to show a family like that once in a while..that's like cancelling a show that shows an interacial family. We're not the same world we were 60 years ago, this should be a socially acceptable thing but for some reason it's not. Grow up america.

I hadn't heard about that yet, but your right I find it ridiculous too. If the kid had visited somebody with strait parents it would have been perfectly find. Homophobia starts at such a young age because it seems that the media trys to ignore it, I've heard people saying that spongebob was supposed to be gay. The whole matter of the subject is ridiculous many people say that they are for gay rights but in the end are afraid of it.
If we ignore that people are gay in our society it is showing another form of homophobia.

Ugh, yeah, I heard about this too. Of course, I think it's BS, but unfortunately homosexuality is still considered taboo enough to give the rabid "family values" groups plenty of sway.

It always strikes me as funny how tolerance all too often only goes as far as what's considered the social norm. Obviously tolerance has to end somewhere, but when we insist that our children's shows and pro-diversity stuff only go as far as what's already widely socially accepted, it almost defeats the purpose of raising diversity awareness at all.

Grow a pair, PBS.
