I hate southern sterotypes. If you happen to be from down home all you yankees (and just about everyone else) instantly think that you drink a six pack every night, own at least 3 hunting dogs, have a pickup truck with a gun in the gun rack and have recently married a relative of yours. Now what really gets me is when people use the term redneck. Y'all have gotten the term redneck mixed up with white trash. A redneck in orgional parlance was a man who worked out doors (mostly farmers) and because of various enviromental junk have red necks. White trash is the sterotypical southerner. these are the people who marry their relatives and are traditionally morons. but even that sterotype is overblown by you yanks and jeff foxworthy hasn't helped. Now the last major one is good ol'boys. This one doesn't sound bad but it has deviated from the orgional parlance in the extreme. In the orgional it was meant to lessen the blow when you revaled a person's faults. for example: "rick's prone to drinkin a bit to much but he's a good ol' boy. It's like saying that despite his issues he's still a good guy.

WYD is technically for youth between the ages of 18-35...the US is really the only country that takes 16 year olds. So you can go for the next several years... Also, someday, if you are serious about going to Sydney, you really need to start planning now, crazy as it seems. My church has already gotten a travel agent, and a first deposit is due on the first of July. There are very few flights in and out of the country, so you need to book early. Also, it is going to be SUPER expensive. My trip included 3 days in Rome in addition to Germany, and it ended up to be just over $3,000 a person. For Australia though, those going from my church will be lucky to get in for under $4,000 ($5,000 if they add the New Zealand extension). It is because of this that I will, sadly, not be attending WYD 2008 . They were seriously considering holding one in Latin America somewhere, and if they do in the next couple of WYD's, I am SO there!

When blue said that her cousins (southerners) were blatant homophobes... Please note that I was not trying to debate anything of the sort...I just heard amp's comment and remembered my mildly amusing annecdote... (It probably would not have been as funny if I wasn't there with a Cahtolic group...)

God...my dad is so Southern stereotypical it isn't funny...especially considering that he's only from just south of the Mason-Dixen line. Lives in a shack in South Carolina with a bunch of rattin' dogs and a couple bibles.

Freedom, I don't know how this has changed into a gay debate. I think it just got slowly incorperated. I love being a person from the south. Yes, I do get questions about where I am from when I go out of state. But, I love my accent. Also, darlin' and honey are just the best terms of affection.

quote: but gay people don't scare me, that said I will not go with in 60 yards of gay bars and the like
When I was in Germany, my small group almost ate at a gay bar...we were standing on the sidewalk reading the menu when my friend who is fluent in German came up and she's like "Oh, you guys are going to eat here" and we said "yeah, I think so...". She says "Okay..." and as she's walking away she says "By the way...it's a gay bar..." We're like "okay..." and we all start laughing and then we find a different place to eat dinner. Cologne, Germany was where World Youth Day was, yet it is probably the most sexually liberal places I have ever been. There were people on the street corners handing out phamphlets and a certain form of birth control...not to mention the dirty movie theaters...it was weird to see that city swarming with Catholic youth...

Stereotypes in general are all over the place. There isn't a single person on this planet that doesn't stereotype in some way. It's whether or not you act on those stereotypes which makes the difference. Never forget however that the stereotypes did have to come from somewhere and many times those people that fit the stereotypes most perfectly are very proud of this. Its never fair to judge someone because of a stereotype but the stereotypes do exist and therefore they must be acknowledged and dealt with on your own.

Damn. I'm a member of the northeastern elite. Honestly, we think we're better than southerners...more informed, better educated, more eloquent, better dressed. We're a bunch of arrogant pricks and it doesn't bother us at all. No wonder we never win presidential elections. Honestly, I buy into some of those stereotypes. And I believe behind every stereotype there is some truth. I have a few second cousins from Alabama whom I've met once. They were the politest and friendliest people I've ever met although they were blantant homophobes and couldn't believe I'd never shot a gun or eaten steak. There is obviously a geographical divide in this country. These stereotypes reflect this. Enough said.

quote: btw that last bit is not a bad thing at all I'm deep fried and proud of it!
Well I mean I don't get called redneck. I'm black so that's kinda hard to do. Yeah it depends on what reference you are using the word redneck. It can be pretty messed up. quote: For example I am one of the few people at my school who drink southern sweet tea and will eat country fried steak and eggs for breakfast.
