It's also hard to determine who southern. Like I'm from Arizona (Mesa, whoop whoop!) and I consider myself southern (it's below the Mason-Dixon and border Mexico geography wise that's as southern as you can get) I'm also considered southern by other because of various tastes I have for food and the like. For example I am one of the few people at my school who drink southern sweet tea and will eat country fried steak and eggs for breakfast. I own a cowboy hat (no not a stetson they don't look good on me) so from what people know of me, just for these things I am marked as southern. btw that last bit is not a bad thing at all I'm deep fried and proud of it!

Don't get me wrong that's some of the great things about being from the South. We can get away with it, but people look at as if we are just all ignorant rednecks.

Any movie you watch that's Southern will always have that over-bearing sterotype. Either we are stupid imbreeders or walk around bare-foot and sipping iced tea. People who have Sounthern accents really are not cast in great roles in movies and if they are it's usually typecast. Look at Lucas Black. He has been typedcast since he was 10. People from the North really do look down on Southerners and some even think Blacks are still being treated as badly as we used to. We aren't though. People make fun of me because I say ya'll. Well not people from the South, but when I went to England it was so serious over there. One person told me he couldn't even concentrate on what I said when I said ya'll. We really do get a lot of slack in this world of being from the South and frankly it's getting a little old.

Hey they call me a redneck and white trash, I'm just fighting fire with fire (and they are yankee is a geographic reference to any one from north of the Mason-Dixie line) quote: nothing but a joke
if other races can get pissed about crap like this I don't see why I can't

I have never seen any "yankees" making those assumptions about southerners. They're jokes. No offense, but I doubt people were smiling because you were from the south, iamastar. There really isn't anything funny about that, unless you really do fit these stereotypes. Don't you think the New Yorkers get tired of people making jokes about their accent or how they drive? Don't you think the northerners get annoyed with all the Yankee jokes? There are stereotypes for all regions and it's better to take it with a grain of salt and realize it for what it really is, nothing but a joke. Okay amp. Here's the thing: (And no, I haven't bothered to read the entire post.) Before you even began debating southern stereotypes, you immediately categorize everyone else as "Yankees". You damned hypocrite...

I get what you're saying. I was born and raised in the South. I will never forget the trip I took to New England two or three summers ago. Every time we got lost and had to ask for directions the famous question of, "Well, where are you guys from?", followed by the smiles were annoying after awhile. I mean, you could only imagine what they were thinking we were like at home. For them, it's probably like watching the Andy Griffith Show but 20 times more redneckish.
I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect. But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize. My friends, I don't feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for wha
