I remeber what my spanish teacher told me when I asked her this question in the 9th grade and she said that Mexicans stare because it's a common thing to do in Spain and Latin America. In american culture it's considered rude to stare but there's nothing rude or unusual about staring in Latin America and Spain. They do it all the time. Smile

i DO know what you are talking about, your not trying to be offensive. i get it from indian and middle eastern guys alot too.

here's my explaination, we are shinny and new. at least as far as the hottie thing goes, i think it's just because people are attracted to things that are pleasent and unique (at least to us). i figure i'm getting starred at because i'm blonde with fair skin, and i'm probably not as fully clothed at the girls back home in some cases. alot of white guys i know go ga-ga over exotic beauties with dark complexions or unusual features.

i do it too in fact. i see images of indian women, middle eastern women, japanese woman and stare because i don't see that as often as other people. i live in a small town and so sometimes i do it when i go into the city too, it's nothing personal and it's not like i'm sexually oogling them, i just find their appearance fascinating. another example is bjork: she is pretty, but she's also so unusual looking that when i see one her videos or something i can't take my eyes off of her.
it's like looking at pictures of a forign land with castles and temples. i live near a temperate rainforest, so even when i look at pictures of desserts i am taken by them.

I think for some guys (No not just saying Mexicans) if they stare at you hard like that it means a challenge on their manhood. That's what I got from some guys.

I guess being tough is everything to them and they need to prove that they are so strong.

But some just stare for other reasons too.

It all depends...............

and I quote myself

quote:
I never really asked anyone about it....so I'm curious in most Latin countries, is it considered rude or a challenge on your manhood to stare?

no I never have. Most times as I also stated, where I was from, it meant watch your back. And all the Latinos in Spanish Harlem agreed with me on that without my asking. Where I am now....I don't know what it means, I don't care and I just think it is rude.

Being as I don't live in a Latin country...I am not able to ask anyone in a Latin country, but if someone on here is....let me know Smile

As for me, i've sort of noticed it but not really. I do know that if you walk into a place or go into an area that is latino dominated, then they will stare just because you might not exactly fit in. Just the same way blacks will stare if a white person enters an area that is entirely blacks. Or just the same way you would stare if suddenly a black came into a country square dance bar or something.

This makes me think about how we all see eachother. And it makes me think about something that just happend. I am constantly driven crazy by the way black people in my area drive, really slow. It's not even if they have a good car, they just drive slow, I don't know why....there is no reason for it. So a couple days ago I am standing in line at Taco Bell and this black couple were next to me. They were going off about how slow white people drive and how white people do this and that. I thought it was pretty funny, because I was just thinking it about them after I had followed them down the street to get there.

I have noticed the Latin stare and honestly alot of time I think it's because people wanna fight me. Most places I lived, when you get the look, it doesn't mean someone wants to take you to the prom, it means watch your back. I understand this is not true everywhere, like where I am now. I never really asked anyone about it....so I'm curious in most Latin countries, is it considered rude or a challenge on your manhood to stare? It may mean nothing to them, so they may not think it is a problem.

Keep in mind, in some countries burping and farting at the dinner table is considered a compliment.....

i'm mexican. Asked my mother about it. She said it was a false generalization.

Other than that, i don't really know why they stare nor have i noticed it.

is this a serious question?
is it that complicated anyway...

dont you ever just want to stare at someone?i do,dont have a reason, they can be pretty, weird, cute, odd, ordinary, anything,it just comes to my mind.i dont do that though.i think it embarrasses myself,so i pretend as if i didnt notice.
i guess everyone probably wants to stare sometimes, maybe Mexicans just do when they feel like so.they wouldnt know someone'd start a topic to discuss how they stare...

Your hair looks funny, Joey. I bet that's what they're staring at.

They're probably thinking: "Ay me Dios. ¿Qué él pensaba cuando él decidió tener a semejanza de eso cabello? Mirarámos fijamente a la maravilla."

Hey, I'd do the same Wink

It's okay uptown.

Cynthia, that's pretty much (what you listed) what I thought originally.

What can I say? I thrive on controversy. This was pretty controversial - especially if you were to post it on a YouthNOISE en Espanol.

i suppose i've never noticed it, because i live in suburban minnesota, and there aren't a lot of immigrants here.

when i travel, i'm usually the one staring at other people, picking up trends and styles from other areas.

sorry i was such a grouch on my last post...it's been a loooong day.
