America is about to start a war. For no good real good reason i know of. During this time, i think it's a good idea for us to go back and look at some things MLK had to say. He told his followers not to use voilence but, to protest peacefully. Yes, they were attacked and in some cases brutally beaten. but, there would have been a lot more voilence had they retaileted with voilence. MLK changed the world without resorting to voilence. Don't you think that America can do the same?

I really admire Martin Luther King, Jr., and I have ever since I was a little kid. I wrote a report on him in 5th grade, and I got an A on it. I think learning about him helped me to be a more tolerant person. If I didn't learn about him when I was young, I probably would have become a racist... I was close with a LOT of people who were bad influences in that respect when I was a kid. (By the way, when they saw my report, they thought I was being brainwashed by the school or something!!) About my day off, though: my sister and I are really annoyed at this one local station, because every MLK Day they interupt my sister's favorite soap opera to show a really lame parade in Los Angeles. It's not even a nice parade; it's just a bunch of people sitting in lawn chairs on floats, and a bunch of L.A. high school marching bands! My suburb has a similar parade on the 4th of July, and the local news never interupts TV shows to show that!! Sheesh...

Well, that's what I plan to do, among other things. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the most influential people of the 20th century, and though I didn't understand why he was so revered when I was very young, I do understand now. Thank God there are people who recognize his truths and his pioneering spirit. Peace, Birdy

I read this great open letter Martin Luther KIng wrote when he was in jail. My English teacher made my class and i read it for an assignment to see a side of him other than the "I had a dream" speech; I am sooooo glad, because i felt i have found a side of him to look up to. Before i used to think 'ooooh, MLK day, no school!!!!!!!' and I'd see him as just a guy who campaigned for equality. After reading this letter he wrote, he is one of the greatest men to ever live. I have to say it was one of the greatest works i have ever read in my life. So go on the internet and try to find "the letter from birmington jail," it'll change your perspective on him and you'll understand the meaning of MLK day more

I'm recieving the Presidental Service Award, for having completed 100+ hours of community service since April 21, 2001 (8 months exactly), National Youth Service Day. I have 119 hours "officaly" counted, but more than that which I never turned in. It's gonna be pretty cool, its a statewide celebration. Making it even better, I'm going with some of my friends from our local Youth Center who were there for the Service Day. The world's a little cleaner, breath a little freer; things have only gotten better for me. ~Sarah

Going to school, because some schools don't get Martin Luther King day off. It is really annoying that half the state gets it off and the other half doesn't. I think everyone should have MLK day off, because he did a whole lot.
