Let's look into the future here. Homophobia, sexism, racism… Do y'all think that someday all of these will be no longer an issue?
It has been said that homosexuality is today's Jewishness… people feel that they are justified to have predudice against them, or to slowly inch away from them, or to talk about things being "gay" just because they don't like them. (People used to talked about things being "Jewish" just because they didn't like them.)
Will bigotry ever disappear? Will the pyramid invert itself, so that Jews, gays, women and blacks will be the ones with all the power? Let's have a little discussion here without actually saying what's right or wrong, just suggesting what the future's gonna be like.
Just go back to i dont know the.. 40s, 70s, whatever. Things are improving as we evolve!! Whats seems normal today would have been absolutely wrong years ago. I think as time passes we become more aware and more tolerant. History speaks for itself!!!
First of all, Norrow, nobody's responded to your extraterrestrial idea because the first topic is what everyone wants to talk about right now. Try starting a new board for that one.
And, about racism ending, it's definitely possible. I don't like to think of myself as a pessimist or an optimist, but as a realist, and if you think about it, it can happen.
Right now everyone's been raised differently, and different areas of the US and the world have different views. I think it depends on where you live. I consider myself lucky to be near NYC, where there are so many minorities they've become the majority. If a new generation can be raised to respect and tolerate everyone else, then racism will come to an end.
Right now there are lots of inter-marriages between different cultures, and most people in the US are mixes of different races. I'm proud of my heritage, and everyone should be. If people learn to respect themselves then they will respect others. Theoretically we should all eventually end up the same.
If "humans are a bunch of bigots by nature," DrStrangelove, then why aren't you one? Why aren't I? Why aren't other animals that way - why aren't various breeds of dogs prejudiced against one another?
My answer: because racism is a societal thing. It's cultural, not genetic - a person isn't born racist. And society can be changed, which is why I have a little more hope for the future.

And people still do. It's just that racism will eventually breed itself if everyone is just let go, because visual stereotyping is an intergal part of human nature. But if we constantly try actively to avoid racism, then it actually fuels it in some respects. The answer: Humans are a bunch of bigots by nature.
What would happen if we were to discover an extra-terrestrial race? Would all lines that we use to divide ourselves up - race, religion, etc. - melt away in the face of a non-human spieces? I like to think so.
The question is not how likely our finding aliens would be to occur, but what would happen if we did.
Nope. As long as there are groups of people who are "different" and don't do things "normally," and as long as other groups feel that they are somehow better than others, there will be bigotry. It's kind of like little kids on a playground: even when they stop tormenting one kid, they'll always find a new kid to harass.
In South Africa at the moment there has been a big backlash in the aftermath of the Apartheid which means if you are a white male you have LESS chance of getting a job than if you are a black female. If there is a white male, a black male and a black female going for the same job the black female will get it (as long as she isn't really underqualified). My cousin, who is a white boy living in South Africa, will have to work harder than many others to get a job in the future, which is hard on him but he can see the justice of it. After years of discrimination against blacks the higher-paid and powerful jobs in companies etc. have become completely dominated by white males. The government has adopted a policy discriminating against whites, to gradually bring an equal mix in the workplace. After this has been achieved the idea is they will adopt an equal opportunites policy. It's interesting because it ties in with what pie is saying!
I would hope discrimination becomes less and less of an issue in the future, however I don't know if it will ever be eradicated completely because there will always be d*ckheads in the world!
Only black lesbian women who are part of a non-Christian religion will be allowed to hold positions of power in any large company or buisness. Kids will call each other white hetrosexual males, and the victim of this will run off and cry. Homer will marry Ned Flanders, and Marge will have an affair with Ms Hoover. The future will be a spooky place.
