Using "gay" as a way to describe someone's behavior is a common thing. I will admit to occasionally letting it slip. However, I realize how it sounds as well and try and keep it to a minimum. Once again, the reason for its offensiveness goes back to the stereotyping thing and therefore if one is acting "gay", it places actual homosexuals into that sort of behavior that is not always accurate or positive.

I totally agree . It is a stereotype . Totally base on Will and Grace kinda stuff . Just trying to say that if you do accept that people are born gay and show certain characteristics then saying "you're being gay" is not really a slur anymore . Just stating a fact . Kinda like saying ...its raining outside .

"Heterosexuality isn't normal, it's just common."

I agree. The word normal sucks because it's just another unfair category. I'm straight, and personally, I believe that the "butch" lesbian and the "girly" gay guy is a stereotype. It's like saying all Asians are brilliant and bad drivers (I'm Asian by the way). There are a few that fit the description, but many who don't. But since that stereotype is broadcast across the world, people notice those types of homosexuals more than the others.

Also, in my current events class, there was a news study on homosexual body language. There were actually trends within body language and people's homosexuality. There was also a link to childhood behavior (not the conditions of their living/family, rather their personalities and subconcious behavior) and homosexuality within a different study we had watched in class. I don't know what these studies will do, but I found them interesting.

And lastly, bluedemocrat, you were not offensive at all. You were curious about a certain topic that is present in our lives today and asked. Smile

that's good.
it's messed up because people seem to think that someone's sexual orientation defines a person, that is, if you're gay.

Well for me, I don't really care if your gay, lesbian, or straight - whatever, you can be just as good as a friend as the next person. I personally don't care about your sexual prefrence, thats your buisness, not mine. I actually have a lot of respect for homosexual people because they have to put up with a lot of shit over it, and I admire their courage.

Being gay can be a choice as well as being born that way. For example, I know a guy who was quite the ladies man in middle school and high school. He graduated and married his sweetheart and it was obvious he loved her so so much. They had two kids and his lovely wife was even pregnant when he left her; for another man. He was not born gay, but he became gay. How? I don't know, but it goes to show that people can have the choice sometimes.

Just thought i'd leave a little reply. And just in case you're wondering, I was born and chose to be straight. That's just me.

Haha. After I post this whole thing, I realize this topic hasn't been active since the 8th. Good going, Green. Oh well. My response is below.

This certainly is an intersting topic. . .

There aren't many noticeable gays or lesbians in my tiny, fairly conservative, small town community. I don't have a hard time picking out the few guys, but girls are rather difficult. However, the girl that wears a badge with a picture of West Virginia covered in the rainbow flag with "Hillybilly Homo" written in the foreground is pretty much a dead give away. At my school, I wouldn't want to subject myself to that kind of ridicule (attained by flaunting your sexual orientation, I mean).

I don't think that homosexuals/bisexuals, etc., are necesarily (sp?) born with similar characteristics. I think because of the media's trend in TV shows like Will & Grace, that people feel the need to be characterized into certain groups. (Though, I must admit, that's probably my favorite sitcom. . .)

Marine:
I beg to differ with you on most all of your points, but it looks like some other people have already refuted them, so I won't be redundant.

How did I not know about National Coming Out day? Hm...

The last reason is crap. I have hardly any female friends and yet i'm not gay. if having friends is such a necessity in your life that it affects your sexuality, than their is something wrong with you in my opinion.

Well, as a fact being gay is not a choice. I've heard this from many many other people that they recieved homosexual thoughts and feelings before they even knew what it was called. They began figuring it out the more they grew. The entire subject though will always be mysterious regardless but many think people can just be "turned" gay or the opposite. It's not true. I've had some gay friends that had to go through so much pain socially wise and home. THey told me, "I wish i can just stop being gay...god i wish" with tears in their eyes. It's very sad and i wish i could have helped. As for the gaydar, gay people that have been around for a while can determine somewhat who's gay or not. by guessing. It's not always accurate but it has nothing to do with psychic powers. People do tend to stereo type of a gay person, even on TV. Still most men that act flemboyant or women that act butch simply do that because of "Trend." Or because that's how they think they should act. Seriously.

Oh no, you d'int.

1. I've had a father in my life, all my life. But our relationship was never positive.

2. I was ALWAYS, always, always, allllllllways made fun for not being attractive by men. Worse of all, they were men I liked.

3. I can't make male friends AT ALL. I hardly ever could.

4. I'm straight as a fucking arrow.
