It's just stereotyping, and people fitting into the stereotypes. It's as simple as that. Gays come in all shapes and sizes, while usually you'd expect a gay guy to be a well groomed, in shape, feminine guy, I've seen gays who are fat, dirty people and gays who look, speak and act like regular guys... Same with lesbians, I know some very feminine, normal looking girls who are lesbians and some who are butch and talk in deeper voices. Stereotypes, that's all it is, and the fact that most stereotypes are drawn from trends based on the people who stand out most in a group, not necessarily the majority. Examples: feminine gays, butch lesbians, emo kids who cut, blacks who commit crimes, german neo-nazis, racist southerners, snotty rich people... etc.

I think there is a general trend, yes, but it's definitely not true for everyone. So according to some "curve", if you will, people may be able to pick up on a person's sexual orientation, but some of the time these assumptions will be wrong.
