So, at my school, I've noticed that at lunch time, everyone tends to hang around with their same race. There is just congolmerates of whites, mexicans, asians, all over the cafeteria and commons and hardly any of them are mixed at all. Now, there is no real racism at my school, but isn't this just weird? It's like a voluntary racism that no one pays any attention to. Trying to get in with one of these crowds outside your own in pretty hard. They're all set with the people in them and aren't looking for any new comers, especially if you're not the same race. We were having a discusion on this in my jounralism class and all of them are white, while I was the only asian. Does anybody have any opinions on this?

Its just instinct. You tend to go with the crowd that you have more stuff in common with. more similarities...think about it, you dont really hang out with the opposite crowd.

I witnessed a little bit of that in middle school, but that's the last time I saw it. I don't really believe it's an act of racism. Maybe it sometimes depends on who your friends are & how you grew up. If someone's Mexican & since birth they've grown up in an predominately Mexican community than most, if not all, of their friends are going to be of the same race. Maybe it's because people are drawn to others who might have the same background as them. I don't really know but I'm thinking someone should step out & do something different. Try something new.

From what I've heard this happenes alot throught the U.S. Perhaps because the poeple have nevere really thought about going over and sitting with the black kid. Maybe when the new people got there they sat with same-race poeple because that was what everyone else was doing. Who knows? I wouldnt call it racism at all unless certain groups of people won't let others sit with them BECASUE they're a different race.
