I'm assuming that most of you are familiar with the buck-toothed American Idol reject William Hung. Well, he performed on the Today Show and has his own CD coming out. Simon dubbed him "the worst singer in the world". So why do you think he appeals to so many Americans?

The answer as to why the American public worships William Hung is simple: he is a modern-day, Asian caricature. Just look at him; he has a thick accent, horrible teeth, can't dance for his life, has virtually no sex appeal or semblance of masculinity, and is an ENGINEERING major at UC Berkeley. He plays into all the traditional stereotypes of an Asian male. I doubt even the good people at FOX could've come up with a better stereotype character. And there you have it; he's so popular because he is the extreme image of everything that the American media has portrayed the Asian male to be: sexless, weak, nerdy, unattractive, awkward, etc. Hell, the only thing missing is martial arts! And if this doesn't convince you, think about it this way. Do you think, even for a MOMENT, that a white, black, or Latino male would've received nearly the same amount of attention for an equally embarrassing performance?

I never really watched American Idol though I did take part in Peruvian Idol (in USA) at my college. Its too bad people have stereotypes of others. I happen to know an Oriental guy who is very athletic, and good looking. He's way older than me so I'm not interested in him but I don't think people should stereotype people. Also some assumed he would like ping pong because he was Oriental and he's more into basketball. Frown Smile Cool Big Grin Wink Razz

It depends on what they need and why . Like for example if you are doing a dance and you say mom I need some money to buy clothes for the dance we are doing. Then I would maybe give you some money (any kind of thing like that then you need it)Thats ok if you want money from your mom all the time or dad but don't evr take advantage of neither of them because your going to hurt your self.

The issue here is not racism. It's stereotypes and America's receptiveness for it. You need to comprehend what your eyes read.

Leave him alone, oh yeah and dont gimmie any of that race crap, i can tell you whats racist, and the issue is really not.

Before you brought up the fact that everybody likes him just because he portrays the American stereotype of an Asian male, I thought that they just liked him because he was funny, so funny that he was cute in a way. Now I know many Asian males (being asian myself) and not one of them are even close to what William Hung is. They look just like any other race, except for their hair color, their eyes, and maybe a little darker skin. Sometimes America sickens me, we make quick judgements about a race, nationality, etc. and we trust what the media says about things. For instance, why do so many people I know make fun of Canadians? Although America is called the Land of Opportunity, many of those immigrants are pushed aside and treated as nobodys. Hopefully one of these days we (Americans) will learn to change and have an open mind about other people in the world.

Human beings naturally attempt to organize and classify everything and anything that they come in contact with. So from birth we learn to stereotype in order to simplify this complex word that we live in. Of course William Hung is a physical representation of all that we place in the stereotypical Asian male. People feel self assured when their preconceived stereotypes are realized. This brings order to their chaotic world.

*hehe just an avalanche of BS that i felt like writing. i like the guy. (didya know that he landed a $25k contract? he even has a music video... he sold his soul to the media... )

Ask yourself the same question for Survivor, The Real World, High School Reunion, or any other "reality tv" shows.

I don't watch it. However, when everyone at my school started talking about the Hung audition, I was curious and took a look at it myself. The video is floating all over the internet.

And this thread in the 'Ending the isms' section because it's about stereotypes.

It's not just teenagers though. He has legions of adult "fans" too. Also, it's a disgrace to real musicians that Hung got a record deal despite the fact that he can't sing or dance decently.

Music is dead.

___I've never considered myself one of the American Crowd, so I guess it makes sense that I also don't picture Asian males that way.(don't all races have nerdy types?) Well the reason I would guess everyone likes him is his 'daftness'(being the nice way of saying, "he's an idiot"). It's the same thing with the Timmy character on South Park. Teenagers love idolizing and mocking people who are 'slow'-minded. It's just the way mean children think(I would know, I used to be one and still am in some ways).

___Mentally challenged person = Free range verbal abuse.... because everything said in favor of the victim, is sarcastic and cruel. William Hung has no talent and everyone who supports his lack of talent is sending the message that it's ok to mock people for not being as intelligent as most other people.
