People DO make fun of people who are skinny. "You weigh nothing!" comments aren't terrible. Usually ugly comments dierected and thin people pertain to eating disorders. For example, whenever anorexia or bulimia comes upin school, friends or peers will call my name out, or other skinny people around me. It's not true, but it makes one feel self-conscious. I know I'm reluctant to go into a restroom after I eat a meal lest I get comments about throwing all of my food up. It's absolutely ridiculous.

bella:

Although that's true, people don't seem to pick on underweight people as much because there are so many more of them. Plus, it's not usually as mean hearted.

Take my friend: she is TINY. It's just the way she is. And we joke around with her all the time like "You weigh NOTHING!" ect., but no one would ever really make fun of someone who's skinny. Where as this other girl I sort of know is overweight and poked fun at constantly.

We can thank all of this prejudice to a model named "Twiggy" who made this stick-thin, flat butt and chest, no curves or fat anywhere look popular back in like, the 60's or something.

I would like to add to this.

Not only to overweight people get prejudaced against, but also do 'underweight' people.

Though, your friends can help you out, and stand up for you. Some people don't understand that there are people with health conditions out there that can cause weight problems. (hope I'm not offending you in any way.) If you try to talk to other people about health issues in general, then maybe they will understand.

peace

Health should be valued more than weight- so as long as you keep yourself in good health, what do appearances matter? If only we could convince society altogether..

Quote Questionin' time!

I agreed that health should be valued more than weight, but also, I know that some people take the Looking Glass Self a little too serious.
The Looking Glass Self is base on the sociological Theory of the process of which our self develops through internalizing others to us:
a) we imagine how we appear to those around us.
b) we interpet other's reactions
c) we develop a self concept

Some of these, which I listed above could have some fracture to how we feel about ourself from what others say or think about us just because of our body weight. Though, what I always try to tell my friends, is that all that should matter is how you feel about yourself, from the inside.

Peace

I've always been a "Rubens" girl. (Rubens was a painter famous for his big, beautiful women) In fact, my painting teacher affectionately called me that.

It's taken me years, and an anorexic sibling almost dying for beauty, to truely except myself as large and in charge. I'm an 190 lbed woman, I ain't small.

But I'm not unhealthy either. I don't eat fast food. I cook or my mom cooks every night. I eat when I'm hungry and not when I'm not. I've cut down on stress eating. I'm healthy!

But god damn it if I will hide behind t-shirts and baggy clothes. Hell no! I'm a budding fashionita with a thing for the bohemian coutre and faery like skirts.

As much as I support bold, beautiful, big girls, I also know that some big girls will hide their bad eating habits and horrible food choices behind false self confidence. Be proud of what you are but be healthy. Don't make the excuse, no one understands, to continue making bad life style choices.

Omg I am so sorry I feel bad for you! No one or anything should comment you like that you need to stand up for your beliefs and tell them I am beautiful and no one or anything can bring me down. I am hoping you feel comfortable in your own skin.

When I developed my "sickness" I thought I was beautiful. The point was that no one else did.My own mother would say that I was a fat b$#!h so at first I really thought I was.But I wasn't.It took me a long time to realize that.I've told me b.f. and now all of you. She's helping me through it.I'm starting to feel stronger and better about myself. To all the other girls out threre going through what I went through you're not alone. You're beautiful. And I'm here for you. It shouldn't matter if a person is big or small tall or short black or white. They are not defined by their looks, it is just a shell that protects the real people that we all are. Everyone is human, and has feelings. No one should be ridiculed for their looks and no one has the right to pass judgement on anyone. Everyone has flaws some are more visible then others but that does not make them any less human. There is so much more to a person then their looks, you need to look beyond the looks and find their soul, that reveals the true beauty. People do not choose to look the way they do ( unless the have plastic surgery) so do not make fun of them, maybe you should worry about your own flaws before pointing out everyone elses.

I used to be a victim to it, but then again I never cared. It always sucked though, but once people found out I could beat the crap out of them or that I didn't care they left me alone. Then exercise helped with the weight loss.

Birdy - First and formost do you like how your look (don't include others opinions)
Second, that is a form of verbal harrasment, does your school have a policy against that? If not stick up for yourself and don't let it bother you because all they want is the power of making you feel bad.

I often have a difficult time in public situations when a topic is brought up that concerns my weight. I really have no control over it, for the condition is genetic. I do not gain weight, I do not lose weight, no matter the diet and exercise. I simply stay at a constant weight that is considered obese for my height range. The doctors know there is nothing they or I can do for it, yet I am ridiculed on a regular basis concerning my eating habits. One should not have to live like this.

Everyone should always eat the right amount of food.If anyone calls anybody names for being heavy thats just really mean of them and they have a problem. No one should ever get made fun of for being heavy or over heavy. And if there are people out there who are heavy and trying to lose weight you shouldn't eat less but make sure you eat healthier and excerise!

Glad to see that so many of you have the "a lot" vs. "alot" and "its" vs "it's" thing down. Lesson number three: loose/loosing vs. lose/losing.

This is a really good topic because there are a lot of posts about how to loose weight, but not that many about weight prejudice.

"you know what, i bet "overweight people" are a hell of a lot more healthy than half the ******* anorexic preppy's you see walking around."

first of all, i resent that you attatched preppy after the word anorexic. there can be anorexic goths, punks, clubbers, and any other group there is. also, while overweight people CAN be healthier than ANOREXIC people, it doesnt mean that skinny people are anorexic therefore overweight people are healthier than skinnier people. being overweight is a big deal. no pun inteded. it can lead to diabetis, heart problems, joint problesm, and if it is enough of a problem, it can substantially shorten your life. a lot of teenagers that are overweight or adults that became overweight in their teenage years did it because of stress. i was flipping channels and i landed on this show where they were interviewing a 25 or so year old man that weighed over 700 pounds. i think it was on mauri. he said that in high school he was a little overweight and he got teased and so he started gaining and gaining because he turned to food for comfort. there are two problems with this: you shouldn't turn to material things for comfort and you shouldnt tease someone seriously because you dont know what it is really doing to them.

anorexic people arent any healthier or any better. they dont usually get teased because half the time people that turn anorexic start out no more than a couple pounds overweight. overweight people dont suddenly wake up and decide not to eat because usually they have become overweight because of a physological problem (sp?). i have been called anorexic several times and it is really degrating because i am the way i am HEALTHILY (word??). i weigh 97 lbs, im 5'4, and im d@mn healthy if i say so myself. Mad also, there is a difference if someone is overweight and if someone is muscular. there are guys that weigh over 200 pounds and are under 5'11 and they can be healthy. muscle weighs more than fat.
