I know this has been briefly discussed before, but do you think it's right for society to claim it's "abolishing" racism when in fact it's still segregated?

Take black colleges, for instance. Is it right to have all-black colleges?

What about black history month? Aren't there many white people in history who've contributed just as greatly as black people have?

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I find the situation interesting. What do you think?

omg who cares that there's one month devoted to a single race? does it really affect your life that strongly? all that happens is you here "black this black that" from teachers at school and maybe you'll see something about it on TV. is it really necessary to piss and moan about what one month out of 12 is labeled? no

I'm not entirely sure what sort of history classes you took, but in mine we learned about many great people, and they were not all "white." In history class they may not cover every single great figure in history, but there are so many from so many different cultures.

Black history month seems ridiculous. I am by no means racist, but by giving one race a month and not others isn't quite fair. Yes African Americans have suffered a lot, but things have come a long way. I also don't believe that geminiangel521 said that all black schools are bad. All black schools only segregate them from other races. Why not have the interaction?

As to schools, they should be accepting students based on their grades, talents, and skills, not their skin color or religion. Racism and discrimination happens to everyone. No one is exempt. People can point fingers all they want but that doesn't change anything.

the thing about all black colleges is that some people feel more comfortable around those of their same culture they don't dislike white people its like black people know some stuff that others don't and can't understand unless they've been through it themselves. i mean this whole country is predominately white its not like you have to look for white people (no offense intended in this) And black history month is important cause all we learn about is slavery and how Lincoln saved the country and Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and if we're lucky Malcom X. While the rest of the time we learn about the revolution, suffragist movement, wars, presidents and etc. theres more to us then a bunch of people fighting for rights that they should have had in the first place.

Hate? No. Hate is rarely justified. But I would be a little sore with them. You can't just forgive and forget. It doesn't work like that, but everything else? I agree with you on. Though you could say it in a more respectful way, aye? Let's try not to breed more hate than we have to.

It wasn't at the time. Pay attention to what I refer to.

I agree that they shouldn't have a dumb history month, and I was unaware of owing them money because of their ascestors being slaves, but that's also over the line. However, why should they appreciate that we've brought them here in such disgrace? It's like saying to the Greek pagans, we've done you harm in the past, but everything's turning out alright now... so, let's just ignore what we've done and be friends. You can't just ignore something like that. You have to work through it. And believe it or not, people are still working through it.

i understand that at the time america was still a thriving country, but does that mean that the people of australlia should hate england for dropping off all of their murderers, convicts etc on that island? i guess ultimately im saying that black people need to stop complaining about the past and everything that happened and focus on what they do have. and stop trying to get more. no one deserves a history month. there isnt even a white history month and we founded this country. hell there isnt even a native american history month. not everyone has a chance to become an american citizen and it seems that black people hate it and are always looking for that little more to "stick it to the white man". all they talk about is african pride and africa this and that. truth be told that most of them would probably be dead from all the reasons that earthgoddess stated. hell most of them have probably never been to africa, and will probably never go to africa. it almost seems like they just cant be happy about being american. they have to make sure you know they are african american. what part of africa is the name Shamiqua, Tyreke, Mykeesha from?

oh and black people have been demanding monetary compensation for slavery because they claim that slavery has set back the african american race. its pretty pathetic.

That's also what's happening with women. They ( where the general movement is heading ) think "equal" means making up for all the years they didn't have, by being better. I am severely pissed at women colleges and black colleges. And no one tell me that colleges once would only admit men. That's the point of equality laws now. Now that we've established that seperate and equal are not equal, we should stop it instead of being hypocrites.

oy....

Anyway, on the less jingoist/fanatical side of things.... I would like to point out that, though black people have gone through a lot and need to"Work through it" but there comes a point where the search and fight for equality gets to the point of the fight for dominance...Its natural instit for people to search for power...

Because this is one of the greatest countries on Earth. We could be in back in Africa, getting sick from all kinds of diseases, such as Ebola, AIDS, and Sleeping Sickness; or get parasites. We could be victims of the Rwanda massacre or what's going on in Darfur. We could be starving and in poverty. Our lifespan could be cut in half.

Over here in America, most of us have tons of food, plenty of clean water, electricity, plumbing, healthcare, warm beds to sleep on. We don't have to worry about our government ordering us to be killed. Why shouldn't we be grateful? Even though white people enslaved us and hated us for a while, they still gave us more than we could have ever gotten in Africa.

Yeah. All of that and a little more. Dipping back into the whole poverty aspect of africa the chances of many of them ever seeing the US is slim to none. whilst they did have to go through some serious hardships to get where they are, i really dont think anyone (maybe a select few) has the right to bitch, moan and complain about being here. because you know what, it can always get a hell of a lot worse. and please dont get me started on owing them money because their great great great great great great great great grandparents were slaves.

I find that to be very unnecessary and disrespectful. There was no need for that.

what was so disrespectful about it? is it not true? or is there some secret about africa that i dont know. its life ok. get over it. not every place is fun, safe, healthy and rich. people die every day because of famen and disease and im sorry to say that alot of them are from the 3rd world countries in africa. or are you mad because its true? ok instead of chasing lions with spears how about being terroized by drug lords and dictators. maybe thats more user-friendly.

It's in my oppinion that it is not possible to have a society without racism. The only way to acchieve this is to start using newspeak and having Big Brother watch us all the time. The fact is that everyone is racist a little bit, its a natural thing, no one goes through life without making judgements based on race.

(And this is coming from a black person) I think he's right. Blacks really do need to stop bitching. Although, I don't see what's so wrong with chasing lions with spears. That sounds friggin' sweet.
