There is now an increasingly tolerant attitude towards homosexuality in society, especially in the West. However, the treatment of homosexuals differ from one country to another. In some nations, homosexuality is illegal whilst in others, homosexuals are now accorded an increasing catalogue of rights that have been enjoyed by heterosexuals all along. In the UK for instance, by virtue of a recent ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in Lustig-Prean and Beckett v UK, gays can now serve in the Armed Forces. Any measures that discriminate against them from doing so due to their sexual orientation is now unlawful. However, gays have yet to attain complete equality of status in the eyes of the law. Should the rights accorded to gays be extended to the right to get married?

quote: Okay, I guess I'm not really sure what you mean. Yes, many religions don't believe in gay marriage, and it is not currently legal, but what does what those people's religions are have to do with it? Like, are you saying two Lutheran girls could get married, but not one Muslim girl and one Jewish girl? Sorry, I'm just a little confused about what you are trying to say.
She's saying that she doesn't understand why, legally, two people of the same sex can't get married and receive benefits if marriage is considered a legal institution, and there is a separation of church and state, and that because it's a legal institution, it should be allowed without religion dictating who can and cannot get married.

Simply stated, if the government insists that there be a separation of church & state, then why are people making such a fuss over letting people of the same sex getting married because of their religion? It all doesn't make sense to me. People only want to be happy together, knowing that they are legally married and get the same benefits as married heterosexual couples.

quote: I couldn't tell you. I recently went to a GLBT church in Dallas. It was amazing. Everyone was accepted. Whether you were straight gay bi lesbian trans gendered whatever. I looked around and thought "Isn't this what Christianity be? Everyone, no matter who they are, coming together to worship god."
That sounds really cool. I wish my church could be like that. I think it would be so awesome if everyone could just learn to accept each other like that.

quote: Gay marriage should be legalized nationally. That is a no brainer. Yet, we don't want to hurt the church so we state that the churches should have right to refuse to marry a gay couple.
I think that would be a good way to do it. But aren't most churches into loving all people? Why are they so non-accepting of gays?

Majority of the people who go against gay rights state that they feel that way due to religious beliefs. So here is my compromise. Gay marriage should be legalized nationally. That is a no brainer. Yet, we don't want to hurt the church so we state that the churches should have right to refuse to marry a gay couple. That way a church that doesn't want to marry a gay couple doesn't have to and those who want to can. No one looses out that way.

Y not?? that is always my question and also is it hurting me?? If gays getting married somehow hurt me and affected me in any sort of way I might say no they shouldnt be able to get married. Most people who do not want them to marry only feel that way because they do not believe in being gay but what they dont realize is the fact that people are going to be gay no matter if you let them get married or not...everyone always says how we need to get over discrimination and blah blah blah but yet it seems like every day we get a new group of people to discriminate against...first it was blacks now its gays...come on lets grow up and stop trying to make everyone alike
