The Death Of Brian Deneke
If you had a friend or family member that was ran over because they were different what would you do? Some people do not know what to do because they have never been in that situation. In the case of Brian Deneke, his parents made a memorial site of him. The death of Brian Deneke was very tragic. Some facts about the murder of Brian Deneke and what went on:Brian Deneke was killed in the parking lot of IHOP in Amarillo, Texas, he was killed because he was different, he was very caring, Dustin Camp the seventeen-year-old who killed Brian, what happened before, during, and after the killing, and what people thought and did.Brian Deneke was killed in the parking lot of IHOP in Amarillo, Texas.Just about everyone knew everyone.Everyone who knew Brian Deneke said he was a nice and caring person.Parents said that he attracted attention. Dustin and friends were armed. Some had bats and some had clubs.Brian was killed because he was different. He had a mohawk that went blue to green. He enjoyed “punk” music.Brian Deneke was very caring; he would do anything for anyone. He tried to make a difference in the community. When bands came to town,he let them stay at this house so they would not have to pay for a hotel.Dustin Camp was the seventeen-year-old who had killed Brian. He could have gotten 2-20 years in prison. But only got 10 years of probation.$10,000 fine which did not have to be paid. He faced a murder charge. The jury found him guilty of manslaughter.Dustin Camp went to court almost two years after murdering Brian. Almost two years ago,Dustin broke his probation so he had to pay the fine and he is in jail. After only a few months in jail he was in the review process for an early release before breaking the probation. He recived parole .Before the killing there were rumors going around the school that the preps or “white hats” and the “punks” were going to get into a fight the week before the murder had actually happened.During the fight people were hitting the “punks” with bats and cluns. The jocks told them that they looked like dorks dressing how they did.Brian was killed by being ran over in a tan Cadillac. After the running Brian over all the jocks or preps went staright home. The next morning the police went to Camp's home and they had a serch warrent. Elise Thompson was in the car the time of the murder. Sbe said that Camp did not try to stop when asked if he tried to stop. Thompson said that Camp had said “I’m a ninja in my caddy” and “ I bet he liked that one” after running Deneke over Many friends of Brian got a tattoo that said: In Memory Brian 78/97 and most of them were from blue to green because of the way that Brian had his hair. Some say he did not deserve to die. Some thought he was a good kid, some thought that he wasn’t a good kid.He was well respected by friends. The murder deprived this community of someone who had already begun to make a difference to it and no doubt would have made an even greater difference in the future. Some people may have asked themselves did Dustin get away with murder because he was the star of the high school football team?Well,we will never know. His death has left a divided city, a shocked city, and a hurt city in its wake. Family of Brian Denek made a memorial site for him so that people knew more about what had happened and more about Brian and what he stood for. There were different ways that this could have been prevented. There are many things you can do if someone you know dies to remember them. Brian was more than a punk, he was a human being. A little peace never killed anyone. Difference did.

Yes this was a horrible, needless tragedy but that was the norm back in the 80's. In those days it wasnt't safe to call yourself punk let alone dress punk. everyone hated punks Jocks, Hicks, Gangbangers, Neo nazi kids, Cops practicly everyone. you'd have to travle in packs to avoid getting jumped and beaten. Just look what happened to Jello Biafra from the dead kennedys. He had both his legs broked by neo nazi's and at one of their shows in wilmington calif. the cops came in 5 minutes into the show and were swinging their clubs at random people's heads. Nowadays you rarely see any fighs at a show let alone full scale riots.

Brian Deneke...When I first heard about this I was so sad. But, then it gradually turned to anger. Dustin Camp only got 10 years probation for the MURDER of Brian, then, 2 years later he got 8 years for drinking under the age and evading arrest. This was more then he got for the MURDER of Brian. Do you think for one minute that things would have been that same if Brian ran over Dustin? No frickin' way!!

You know, I listen to punk music, go to shows and wear my piercings and patches proudly. But, sometimes I do get made fun of...And, I just commend Brian for having the strength to be who he was...To the end.

I just saw this story on City Confidential and it literally brought tears to my eyes. I read somewhere that the mayor of Amarillo said that he didn't want people to think of Amarillo as a "hick town". Well, I for one will always think of it that way, and will never visit there again. The story makes me so angry with the people of that community and the jury. That case is a travisty to the American justice system. The people of Amarillo who support Dustin Camp are as sick and twisted as he is. And Amarillo as a whole is a joke.

i heard this story on A&E and it got to me. I think that the sentenceing was unjust. If the shoe had been on the other foot then Brian whould have recived the death penelty. Just because someone looks doffrent doenst give someon the right to murder them. i didint know brian and im no where even close to the town, but this story will be forever burnt in my brain and i will never forget it. It makes me think how fucked up some people are...and that i could see something like this happenind in my area.

What do you expect? If you keep overturning on what the majority votes for through judgeships, people will start taking things into their own hands.

When I saw this story on American Justice it really got to me!! I dont think the punishment fit the crime but I believe in Karma and he is gonna get it back 10 fold!! I say a prayer for all of his friends and family every night!! No one should have to go through that kind of pain!! Dustin Camp is a sick and twisted person who should be locked up with NO chance of perole!! I hope that SOB gets his!! I send my condollences to all of the people who knew Brian and I regret that this tragedy happend because he was "different"!! His memory will live on as an inspiration to all who are "different"!! Rock on guys you RULE!!

I remember that day I heard it on the news. I knew preps hated us, but I never knew they hated us so much that they would kill one of us. murder isn't such a bad thing to the court system anymore.

It must be really difficult to state something like this, a tragedy that is obviously not over (since his killer wasn't really brought to justice and it sounds like no real action has done to change the environment that made Brian's death possible) and one that you sound especially close to. But it is really incredible that you can stand up and not just recount a murder, but a person. I think that if more people put thoughts like you have out in the open, people might act a little more human towards one another.

People in this world are so sick.I can't even begin to imagine what is running through their minds. My brother's friend, Chris, was different too. The people on his bus hated him. Chris used to have to run after the bus everyday until someone told the bus driver to stop. It usually ended up a few blocks from his house. I never understood why he put up with that. We used to live in Pennsylvania and the one day things took a turn for the worse. Chris was chasing after the bus as usual and the "preps" were having fun laughing at him. Sadly, Chris slipped on some ice and slid under the wheel of the bus when coming out of a side street. The bus driver only stopped when Chris's friend on the bus jumped out of the back door to help him. Chris died in his junior year of high school. It wasn't a direct murder, but almost no one ever tried to stop it. It could have been prevented if someone had told the driver to stop sooner. Just thought I'd let ya'll know that there are creeps like that all over the world.

what kind of sick person is like that? its just not in your town, its everywhere. kids at my school who are "different." thats one of the things that breaks my heart each and every day. kids laugh at others because they don't take the 5 minutes it could take to save someone's life. i'm not just talking about murder. i'm talking about suicide, which in a way can be like murder if the victim is ignored, made fun of, or has no one to talk to. some people ask me why i talk to her or why i wave at him. why? cause i freakin wanna. if no one hears that person, what happens to them? are their souls eaten away? or do they die in spirit as well as in physical life? sry my thoughts are all bursting out of my head with no sense. i'm so sorry for brian deneke and one day, this stereotyping will stop. i will do whatever i can to stop it. ok love ya tina

live, love, laugh.
