the media is going to generalize no matter what. but you notice that (beer?) commercial where the poor male is being stereotyped as (insert here), and out of no where comes this supermodel in her red dress with her suggestive walk and eyeing, shaking her a** and boobies for all they're worth (literally).... cut to....... guy drooling; and then...... "detergent. for nice clothes that smell good."?!?!?!??!?! it's targeted at men and you'll probably go out and buy that detergent. more money is spent on advertising than on t.v., and movies which are basically mediums for ads. they've put alot of thought into each one to get you. and you'll buy everything they say. KILL YOUR T.V.!!!!!!!!! callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow!callnow! (those ordering commercials say call now an average of 11 times!).

I agree that womens' rights is still an important issue. But if there's discrimination in the media about women, there is just as much about men. Have you noticed how much men are portrayed as stupid on tv adverts these days? Often the woman is shown as the clever/sexy/sophisticated one laughing at the man.
Yes, sexism does still exist, but it may not be as one-sided as you think… I mean, so many girls say that boys are dumb worthless liars who don't think about anything except sex. That's sexism, but it's the other way round.

Ever sence 6th grade ive always been worried about my image.More my wieght than anything else,it got so bad i made myself not eat,now that im homeschooled i think i think about my wieght even more, but i eat a little more, but i sometimes make myself not eat.But i think not just media makes us like that, its like media and non-media people bounce back and forth....example-

media shows all these skinny beautiful women,we say its cause that, but if they showed "fuller" size women we wouldnt buy it as much, but if they didnt start the skinny thing we would buy magazines with bigger women on the front and things,...thing could go on....its just a cycle that will never stop....no matter how many woman and men suffer from eating disorders.....to tell you the truth some people that have eating disorders think it is good that they have it because then they wont be fat...well thats how i am/was.... frown

sure... how can the media not make girls want to be thinner and prettier... after 6 months of doing that to myself i completely realized that being 30 pounds lighter and alot sicker was not the way to go....i mean it's unbelievable how most American women are unhappy with themselves... God made us the way we are for a reason... everyone is beautiful, just not everyone sees it. Don't let anyone make you feel badly about the way you look. I learned the hard way. Don't let a trip to the hospital be the way that you have to learn too. roll eyes

i wish the media would portray men and females that have meat on the bones as beautiful. not all skinny people are beautiful when they strive to live what the media wants them to live and not have one extra pound to call themselves fat.

it ****es me off to hear people including teens (13-18) with kids (8-12) there's a difference, they say that media is suggestive but is media influencing us or are we influencing media? it doesn't shape our culture we do and Violent video games??????? what the f***? honestly people "ohh noo he could get ideas about killing people in this game" that's just sdtupid the majority of kids can distinguish fantasy and reality, sure there are a few who can't but don't throw out the baby with the bathwater, the parents should just be more watchful of what their kids watch and just spend more time with their offspring

first let me say that women are beautiful creatures!!!!!! i'm a guy and i must say that whereever i go, i check out the females,(not JUST boobs, or ace, or face) and i find almost all of them special and unique in lots of different ways (the little things that they don't pay attention to); deserving of the attention (I love you all so much!!!!!!!!); BUT:(Boob jobs disgust me, and make me think less of you; i'll never understand plastic surgery for such shallow purposes; and i wish more girls would'nt care what others think of them.... it's not that important).

second, i disagree with people that think that media doesn't influence the world and that just tuning out will make everything o.k.

turn off your t.v. and look around you; what do you see?ads around every corner. Commercial products fill your house, streets, towns country and life; your car is parked outside on the streets that have been paved specicifally for the use of cars, which make up towns, cities and supertribes (america); when you watch t.v. you observe alone, drifting in mental space, bombarded by litterally tiny flashing lights and unconscious subliminal images bent toward advertising (commercials are relentless repetors and fast, flashy and quick to keep attention). usually the conversation you have with others is t.v. related in some way........(look at now!!!) it consumes and molds our environment, ourlives (aware or not), ultimatly who we are and will become.
(read Jerry Manders, "four arguments for the elimination of television"- thought altering book)

Women have got it bad though. THey are the best advertising strategy. i'm sorry it's come to it, but you can sell anything if you've got a hottie on hand to grab attention. Most girls are no brittney spears (a walking freelance billboard), and i understand why you hate the OBJECTIFICATION so much (guys; i'm sorry for using such a big word). Media is the problem for alot of generalizations though, more than we'ed like to admit. I like to shrug'em off and keep an open mind- i don't want to sound like a traitor, but girls are really smart and one day we'll have a women president, and i'll finally be able to relax. REdjill and vegan are hot - intelligence is the sexiest and most attractive quality to girls;) . keep representing all non-shallow PEOPLE of the world.

I totally agree with you redjill. It is demoralizing to see women STILL regarded as sex objects in the media. Thats why i love India. Arie's song sooooooooooo much. My mother has been noticing a gradual decline in respect for women in the media also. I think we need to start boycotting all those products that choose to objectify women for the sake of the dollar. Do you agree?

I think it's unfair to put stereotypes on anybody women or men. Come on women in the media today are all about sex appeal. It seems like their only audience is men when there are little girls out there watching these musicians and actresses. Then men do not make it better at all with lame shows like the "MAN SHOW".. mad ...i mean what are people thinking those jerks call women juggies..it's disgusting. Women should respect themselfs! I think the best role models are them mom's out there staying home with there children and the ones going out and working. Also to all the girls out there who are keeping it classy and and making a difference.oh and personally I don't care if Britney or Christina are fellow women...I can't wait to see this pop **** faze brunout! big grin

Women should been treated as equally as men. Men and Women both have the right to vote and they should both be treated equally in the media. If you would watch TV you would find many more attractive women then men. Women are seen as just sex sybols to many men and that is wrong. If women aren't soppose to be treated equally we shouldn't have the right to vote and none of us should bring the main income into many house.

I am neither with your push of womens image or against. I see that you are offended in the way women are given to be "man pleasers" and have no say to anything. That is not true. Many of the actresses and singers who may dress on the lighter side may look like someone who is just revealing themselves, may have an alterior motive. Some women understand that that is all the public wants to view. So to send out whatever helpful subject they are trying to get (i.e. sexual abstinence, drugs, etc.) they need to catch the public eye. How? By doing things the public is interested in, as in skimpy clothes. So when they say that they are sexually abstinent or an advocate of stopping worldwide hunger, the public will then listen and respect the views.
2. You have the choice whether to look and believe that women are portrayed as pleasers. If you dont like it dont be a part of it. Dont buy anything that profits their well-being. Instead just promote your own image of good. Or become famous and do the things you invision as "right". You cant stop them from making money or doing anything because they have constitutional rights. Women have all the rights to be equal now. Its just a choice that is made. Not an image that is spread. wink

Personnally, I don't see what th big deal is. Yeah, sex sells, it always has, and it lways will. t'll never change. So, when Ludacris calls women (and men, cause he don't discriminate) Hoes, thats on him. I call women hoes, ****s, bytches, tricks, tramps, the whole nine. I'll cal a dude all that too. It don't make a difernce. If youdon't like it, don't listen. If you don't wanna see Mystikal in a strip cub w/ 5 women shaking that @$$, CHANGE THE CHANNEL. I completly agree w/ whoever said, it all comes down to the parents, they gotta atch what their kids watch, and teach there sons that all women in short skirts do not sleep around. And teach there daughtors to respect themselves. I don't think T.v music, v. games, and movies seriusly have such big impact on people, at least those wo can decipher reality from entertainment. And I wanna say one thing, B. Spears is not a hoe. She wears what U see most all women her age wearing, so what, shegot a body, it's not like she walks around naked touchingherself. Give her a break, I think she's agreat role model, even thouh I hat her music.

As a young teen i would like to say what you watch really has nothing to do with the type of person you are. I have cable in my room and my father lets me watch anything i want. I am also a straight A student. I am a straight A student because I want to be. Just because i watch Rap City and 106 & park on BET doesn't mean a thing. I am not going to say I don't learn somethings like dance moves and words from music but I only use them if i want to. Yes I can dance and some people consider me a really freaky dancer and also i do curse but it is not all because of television. Whatever parents allow there kids to do is what they will do majority of the time. When you give your children limitations it makes them more sneaky then you think they are. I get to do what i want when I want and I respect my parents to the fullest and i and |I do what they tell me to do because they are very fair. Telling your children they can't watch a music video is crazy in my opinion.Nothing and no one can be a bad influence on anyone unless he/she allows them to. Maybe some parents need to just loosen up and trust in thier kids and realize it is a different generation and just because you are strict on your kids and let them be free at times.

I think the media plays a big part in how women are viewed. Most of the females in movies and TV shows are protrayed as bimbo types whose only purpose is to be beautiful while female music celebs are merely sex objects. Take Britney Spears for example, the girl is a strong force in the music indrustry, she's talented to a certin extent and has thousand of children looking up to her yet her career is built on her sex appeal and many of her hit songs are sexist and degrading towards females such as Baby Hit Me One More Time, I'm slave for You and Born to Make you Happy and the sad fact is if she wasn't beautiful, dressed like a hooker and didn't sing those disgusting songs she probably would not be where she is today because no one care's about her talent, when her music is discussed no one talks about her talent, all that is required of her is to be beautiful and to use her body and looks to sell her music and she's not the only one, these day it's diffcult to find a female celebrity especially a pop star who doesn't prance around the stage half naked and with the media sending the message that all females have going for them is their body and looks which is the only way they will be successful in the entertainment industry females will probably never get respect

We do! We have rights, as much rights as those men and we should be treated equally! We should not worry about being 'hip' or 'cool' or 'in style', we should be worrying about being ourselves. Girls, everyone, should be treated with respect. You've probably all heard "I have a dream. . .", well I have a dream that EVERYONE is treated equally. We should not be judged by our gender, age, skin color, religion, the way we look, etc. I agree with. . . whoever said P.L.U.R.-Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. We should all be able to follow our dreams, (hey, I have another symbol thing for that:) N.E.D.-Never give up, Encourage others, Do your best. GIRLS OUT THERE: ONE GENERATION IS ALL IT TAKES TO CHANGE THIS! DO NOT TOLERATE THIS TREATMENT! WORK FOR A BETTER FUTURE!

I'm not sure if people like Britney Spears should be considered role models. It's like they ask to be in those positions. I think the best way for people to be is to be themselves. I don't particularly care for Britney Spears music wise, but if she's just out there being herself then kudos to her,if she is just trying to uphold a certain image then shame on her. One of the greatest lessons anyone can teach people is to just think and be youself.
