Alright it's black history month and I have a question. why do we have one? is Italian or Latin American or Asian history any less intresting? I mean hell let's look at it rationally every race has some intresting history wether white, black or purple with red polka dots we all have an intresting past so why is it that african american's are the only one's with a month just for their history?

I really take offense in the whole idea (I may be contradicting myself) because it calls attention to race which I feel is just as bad as racism I'm not white or black I'm human we need to see the world as made up of humans who are all grey if you really need a color. We don't need to accept people for what color they are we need to accept them as people a colorblind nation if you will

These are not white movie awards. If they were white awards, then only white people would receive them. Now if the black movie awards want ot start recognizing whites...

I don't think that there should be white movie awards. I think that by recognizing race as a factor at all in awards, clubs or anything, we are reverting back to before the Civil Rights movement. If the color of your skin, or the country you come from, or the religion you are TRULY DOES NOT MATTER, then why are we making it matter by encouraging segregated groups?????

It would not be rascism. Most movie roles go to whites. You hardly ever see a black woman or man white someone of the opposite race in leading love stories. If you feel that whites should have their own movie awards so be it. They do already have them though: Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys, MTV Music Awards, etc. I think it's important to show the achievments of blacks. We have come a long way and blacks were not in leading roles or even good roles. It's good tosee them being acknowledged now especially when they wasn't before.

Think about it. We don't have "White history month". We don't have straight pride. We don't have scholarships exclusively for people who are right-handed...or normal height. Those things would be "wrong". Why is this any different from what we have now???

We don't have those, because no one stands up to try to start those groups. They have "gay pride" so I guess straight people don't feel the need to start one. I think it's important to put the spotlight on certain accomplishments. Whether they are black, white, asian, latino, indian, native-american, etc. I love knowing about other histories and mine too. What would we need to know about white history? It wouldn't be wrong to have days to honor people who are right-handed. Yet it's not as important as people knowing especially children that I can be someone. Black kids these days all feel like they should grow up to be rappers. When we teach them that people like Condeleeza Rice, Martin Luther King, Colin Powell, Barak Obama, etc. It's important for them to know that being black isn't negative, but you can be like anyone else. I know how that feels. I can safely say that O'm proud that this country honors minorites history and I can learn about that and improve myself.

It's a liberal thing. we can't think that everyone is human regardless of color, hand/eye dominance, religion and so on and so forth instead we need to single them out put a spot light on them and give them tax cuts

The thing that bothers me is that we can celebrate minorities, but we cannot celebrate majorities.

Think about it. We don't have "White history month". We don't have straight pride. We don't have scholarships exclusively for people who are right-handed...or normal height. Those things would be "wrong". Why is this any different from what we have now???

Booo yah... Sucks for them if its less popular than Black History Month...

Yeah love it. So glad you went ahead and posted that. People automatically think that black history month is unfair yet they don't take the time to find out if ayone else has history months. We do need to accept people as equals, but race is important. I don't want someone to think of me as gray. I black and proud of it. I want people to look at me and they may say she's smart and doing things with her life. If they are impressed, because I'm black so be it. I can't cover my skin and I wouldn't want to. It makes me who I am and it's my parents skin color. I'm so proud of them and without them being black I wouldn't be. We need to learn about the accomplishments every day not just 28 days out of 365.

Other races may have been oppressed as well but blacks were by far the most majorly oppressed in the history of our country. I mean, part of the Civil War had everything to do with slavery and then, afterwards, Southern states had to promise to ratify the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments before they could become part of the country again (all three of which deal with the rights of blacks). And, even then, blacks weren't given the most freedom until the 50s/60s.

The point of having Black History Month is so that Americans will have more understanding of what black people, as a race, have been through in the history of our country and how they have triumphed over that. We need something to remind us of blacks specifically because we - especially white Americans - oppressed them so heavily in the beginning. It's a way to bring about more understanding so that the little bit of racism and segregation that still occurs in our country will become smaller each year.

Black History Month does not undermine the importance of other races but simply highlights and gives credit to a race that had a severe effect on America has a whole.

Well, since American history is the way it is, some people thought we owe blacks, and we owe 'em big. Giving them their own month may help give a little reconciliation and educate the masses on a race's quaky American past. There's been (and still is) so much rascism in this multicultural country, and it was directed largely toward blacks. Now future generations are supposedly going to be enlightened on the marvels of the culture and its history for a thrity-day time period. Yay!

You can say that Native Americans have had very shaky dealings with Americans in the past as well. But unfortunately, they don't have as big of a voice in our culture as blacks do. It's a rare event for me or any average American to see a Native American, since they all seem to be stowed away somewhere small and hardly protected. But that's another story.

Obviously, several other cultures have come into contact with American ancestors and it'd be fun if they all had their months of history. But frankly, blacks have been the only ones who successfully pushed for equality on a large scale.

Natives fought for it too, but they were killed off with diseases and weapons before they could support their reasons for protest. Pioneers needed the Native Americans to clear out, while businessmen needed blacks for their own financial support. That's the main reason for the difference between the histories of the two.

I am not giving excuses as to why they should get their own month. Simply giving ideas as to why they have their own month. I don't think there should be one cerain race month. But, that is an example of how exclusive our country can be.
