Marital rape, or spousal rape is considered a crime in most Western countries, but exemptions still apply in some places, especially in Asia, where a partner rape cannot be prosecuted if the couple were living together at the time of the assault. Statistics show that 8.5% of 1000 randomly selected Asian women had been raped by husbands, boyfriends or de facto spouses. In December 1993, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights published the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women. This establishes marital rape as a human rights violation, but unfortunately is not fully recognized by all UN member states. For example in my country Malaysia, marital rape is not recognised as a crime! Although the country's official human rights commission had urged the parliament to make marital rape a crime, it was rejected with the reason that 'such a move is against Islam', which is the country's official religion. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3592740.stm I think it is extremely unfair to the women when a country refuses to make marital rape a crime due to some lame excuses. In today's world, women are no longer the second or weaker sex! As marital rape is catogarized under domestic violence, then why shouldn't it be made a crime?
