the only thing I cant stand is like when people mix up their slurs with the wrong ethnic group or race... Like calling a vietnemese a gook... thats ignorance.

What I can't stand is people who make jokes about other races they know absolutely nothing about. They think that the people they have "met" count as knowing who they are. If one of my friends ever says something offensive about another race, it pisses the hell out of me and I can't NOT say anything. They are just making ignorant comments and its just stupid. I would like people to say these kind of things to their face and see what happens. They would shut up pretty quickly I'm sure.

Of course there is. Carlos Mencia isn't funny. Or intelligent, for that matter. I still stand by the whole, "If you can't back it up, then you shouldn't be making the jokes. Otherwise you'll learn fast why you shouldn't." I have no problem telling racist jokes, because I know who I'm telling them too, I know I can put up a half-decent fight, and I know that the people I tell them too, will probably have six better ones.

If you can't tell your friends that something offends you, I'd suggest reevaluating your friendship. "You learn about equality in the classroom but you find out about it in life" - Campus Confidential www.myspace.com/yogore

Simple solution, tell a really offensive white joke around your friends... see if they laugh.

The thing is, racial jokes are based on stereotypes. But most of the time, those stereotypes are horribly wrong or out-of-date. Or the jokes are just tasteless, which is why I don't like them. Take this gay joke I heard a while back: what's the difference between a refrigerator and a gay person? One's got more meat in it. It's not even funny. It's just...stupid. Jokes are supposed to be funny, not insulting. If you want to insult someone, well, there's a show on MTV for that. Sadly.

Grow a thick skin, because I tell jokes on all races... I'm an EOE insult thrower... simply because it doesn't matter... sticks and stones you know? but now we live in as Carlos Mencia calls it the "pussy country" because no one can take a joke anymore... you black people like fried chicken and mexicans like tacos, and white people like penut butter and jelly and mac and cheese. That doesn't make me racist... if I want to call someone a porch monkey, it doesn't mean that they are black. PORCH MONKEY 4 LIFE! (it's cool, I'm taking it back)

My friends can tell racist jokes as much as they want. I operate under the logic, if you're going to tell those jokes, you better be able to back yourself up in a fight against someone of said race.

Freedom of speech is limited by the right to the pursuit of happiness. For most, happiness means not having to listen to racist remarks. Sure, it's Billy Bob's right to hate his black next door neighbor, but it's his neighbor's right to not put up with it.

But freedom of speech goes both ways. If a friend says something you disagree with, you have a right to make your feelings known. Whether or not people should be allowed to say racist things is another issue entirely.

No. Freedom of speech.

I applaud you for standing up like that. The actions that are worth the most, are the ones you take when no one is watching. You were doing just that, because you were not a victim of any of the jokes they were telling, and (it sounded like) no one was directly being hurt by those jokes; and yet, you decided to step in. ^^ Well done, we need more people like you in the world.

My friend had a party, and had a bunch of friends over who didn't know each other except through the median friend. They started telling jokes, and one of my friends Tom and I were sitting around listening. Tom is fighting leukemia and is bald due to chemotherapy. One of them pointed to Tom, and said, 'Man that guy looks like he has cancer' and several people laughed. Tom stood up and everyone fell silent. He said, 'I do have cancer, thanks for being insensitive, you asshole' and promptly left. I hope they felt pretty shitty after that. Later they were making jokes about people with schizophrenia, not knowing that I was a schizophrenic myself. I took offense, although I couldn't really blame them - being as stupid as they were. Goes to show people need to think about what they are saying before they say it.
I like these calm little moments before the storm.

I've been there. It's a tough situation, especially when the last thing you want is to be labeled a hypersensitive hippie.
Major kudos to you for standing up to them. As long as you don't start trying to change what they say when they're outside your presence (which will hopefully happen on its own once they mature a little), you're a conscientious person opposed to a dictator.
Be warned, though, that there's no guarantee they'll stop, even after you've made your position very clear. It may reach the point I'm at, where you have to just casually smack them upside the head on occasion.
