It is NOT that f*cking easy...do you think I WANTED to cut myself for all those year? I never chose to but I couldn't stop...don't tell us how to deal with it and just "go talk to ppl" and "keep a straight back (as opposed to our curved one or something?) and be confident" YOU deal with and THEN come back and tell us the same da*n thing...you wouldn't be saying it...you'd completely change your mind.

I agree with Ohio, you should be able to find somebody to talk to. You don't NEED to know the person, you just have to find someone that will be willing to listen and hopefully help. There is always someone out there that want to help, and you can of course talk to people here on YN because we come together to help eachother and talk to eachother. You may find some replies that are pointless, but you can be sure that somewhere here will be someone worth talking to, worth hearing from. Again theres always someone out there that can help you out.

well what about those people that don't have counselors? where do they find the energy to go to some stranger to seek advice, or a listening ear. maybe to a person suffering depression it's as if nobody cares to hear their troubles. let's face it, if someone started pouring out their deepest, darkest thoughts to fight this thing, that person would think 'who the hell is this weirdo?' or am i alone on this point?

I agree with what your saying but sometimes if it's a level-headed caring person then they would always be there and would try to help. Not everyone knows someone like that but many do. I always could count on my teachers and my guidance counselor. Sometimes even posting your problems on a place such as this can help. You can get good solid advice (sometimes) and find out that your not going thru this alone. I think that there is always someone to talk to.

I like how people loooove to disprove things.

I'm depressed.
Not getting far into it.
1: never chose it
2: if I could, I'd be happy
3: no one told me I was depressed
4: I never told me I was depressed
5: I wasn't born depressed, but it has been my reality for six years.
6: I hate being depressed, and I have tried to change it, but it's in the neurotransmitters.
7: I'm not taking Psychology to learn nothing. Depression is due to the over making or undermaking of... what neurotransmitter again? Well, whatever. it's not "all in your mind." it's in your brain, too.

Brehon, you should consider seeking information about me before you speak.

I have been diagnosed with clinical depression for over 5 years, and you don't think I understand what it is? I attempted suicide last year and have been emerged in a mental hospital for 3 months without outside contact, having tests run on me as well as endless surveys and question & answer sessions. I eventually became so sick of the place I pretended to be cured just so I could get out.

Since then I have read many books on the condition, attempted suicide again, and was sent to numerous pychiatrists. Yet I refuse to take medication, for I believe that it will retard my mental capacity enough that I could not continue in the major I am in now, which requires quick thinking skills and intense mathematics. I have tried to change how I live and how I think, but it is simply how I am, and I cannot do anything about it. Now, tell me I don't know or understand what clinical depression is.

Perhaps Jenos and InnerPeace, if you stopped arguing about what depression really is and tried to help an individual, you would better understand.

I myself suffered mild depression, and all the books i read recommended me to go for medical treatment. This may work short term but dosn't i din't. Instead, i went looking for an answer of my own, that got rid of the problem and of my depression. This is far more helpful. Read some philosophy and try to devolop the true Virtues. Read some Marcus Aurelas, partucually the first chapter. Learn from him, and learn virtues form the people around you, even if you don't know them.

Only simple and quiet words will ripen of themselves. For a whirlwind does not last a whole morning, nor does a sudden shower last the entire day.

I am not trying to say that Jenos, I know there are more physical reasons than mental ones for those people that suffer depression. But it is also peoples mental capacities that have to overcome those physical irregularities. The state of depression is brought on by different chemicals produced in the brain, it is up to the individual to seek medical help, to get medication that can help, but the person has to want to get better. They have to mentally be tough enough to change.

Depression is of course a state of mind. When diagnosed with depression you are then proven to be someone who is not a happy person. The most influencial suggestion that can be made is to take any medication that is prescribed to you and believe that it will work. Try to look to the positive things that happen from whatever negative things happen. When your feeling down do something about it, anything that will bring you the slightest amount of pleasure, because when you get depressed you can only go up and you have to try to get there.
