I'd say take a nice empty journal so you can do lots of writing. That doesn't work for everyone, but I love to write everyday (if possible) in my journal. It's fun to reflect and also you can read it later and remember the good and bad memories. And if you are starving you could always tear out a page or two to snack on.

My mom's friend recently came back from visting Russia (I don't know what part). I learned these things from her: - The shops (the one's she went to atleast) are run how they used to be run under commie rule. In one shop they had to buy 4 food products from 3 different people.
- They were told to brush their teeth with bottled water, and to only drink bottled water.
- Well, she and her husband were mugged, but shoot. You've stabbed somebody so I shouldn't be too worried.
 - They turn the water off (for showers, sinks, everything) for two weeks in the summer to clean out the pipes. Yuck.
I know that really had nothing to do with what you bring, but I thought I'd share anyway. quote: . The knowledge that I despise stupid 13 year old girls who cut.
Now that's essential.

Definitely take your laptop. Thaty way you can still come visit us here at YN. Also, as someone has said before, take the sentimental stuff that will remind you of Puerto Rico. And maybe a couple knives from your collection (wouldn't try to take these on the airplane obviously though). Have a great time in Russia. I've always wanted to go there. I love the language.

Essential:
-mp3 player (or CD player, though they weigh more.) -film and camera -ziploc bags and a sharpie pen (they always come in handy) -several xerox copies of your passport (keep them in different bags. Don't walk around and do tourism stuff with your actual passport. If you lose it, you will NOT be happy).
Acutally, because I travel so much, about a year ago I typed up a "master packing list" so there was no way I could forget anything. I print it out and check stuff off as I pack. It's quite handy. NOISEmail me if you want a copy.

Also you might want to take something to read or do in the ride there. I believe the plane ride takes forever and you probably won't be able to sleep the whole time. Take a camera so you can show everyone back home what Russia is like.

Usually when I travel (I don't travel as far as Russia though), I take as few things as I can, but I still pack everything I NEED! Like all different types of clothes. For warm, hot and cold weather. Take something sentimental so you can feel at home. Take your laptop if you want, you might be able to email and stay in touch with your friends easier because you don't know if the house your staying at will have email. Take things you would want to show the people you are staying with. Take pictures and stuff so you can share your life with them. Just don't take too much because you don't want to have 2 dozen bags with you.
