Is it true that the Geek is becoming fashionable in America, however slightly? What does this entail for boffins and other forms of old style losers across the world? I read a commnet on a board about how Geeks are getting more popular, and this inspired this slightly wierd disscussion.

Geek/Nerd is not fashionable at all. People say that to try and be smart when it's not true at all. And really, whats the point in classifications? And while we're at classifications, you cannot overlap geek/nerd with jock. People try and be cool saying "yea, I'm a nerd! Awesome!" But they really aren't. It's kindof pathetic how people try and classify themselves so much to try and gain acceptance and popularity among peers. It really annoys me. I do not mean to pick on you Juggler, but just because you are on math team and academic competition doesn't mean you're a nerd. Anyone who says nerds are popular is lacking the fundamental knowledge of the true meaning of "nerd". Ok, I'm going to get technical here. It is not at all cool to be a geek. Geeks have only one specialized field that they know about, but outside of it (example: anime geek) they flounder intelectually. LAME. What IS rising in popularity is nerdism. Exemplified by the Revenge of the Nerds movies, as well as songs like "It's Great to be a Nerd" by the Arrogant Worms, this rising fassion is somewhat elitist in its requirements. To be a nerd, you must be proficient in the broad catagories of at least sci-fi and/or fantasy. You must be smart all around, and capable of learning about nearly any topic quickly. You must accept the fact that you are a nerd and embrace it. No self-hating nerds are true nerds. Knowledge of roleplaying games (NOT video games... I mean the ones that need dice) is helpful, though not entirely necessary. Video gamers are NOT nerds. There is an overlap, but they mostly get their own qualification. A nerd is versitile and can be quite socially adept, in fact. I openly admit that I am part nerd... and my guess is that anyone who contributes on YN is too. If they deny it, I pity them. I am also a jock. I'm captain and MVP of my school's soccer team. I am also a theater kid. I am also whatever the hell I want to be at any given moment. But I cannot deny I'm a nerd, simply because I am on a math team, an academic competition team, I've played DnD, Call of Cthulu, etc, and I have actually debated with the other nerds at my school as to who would win if somehow the star wars universe banded together and attacked a unified star trek universe (Q must be excluded... possibly the borg, too.) The nerds are probably the most popular kids at the school. We ARE socially adept. We just don't give a damn about pop culture... unless we're it. We HATE being called geeks or dorks. Just nerds.

Hell yeah, geeks rock. But if you look closely you can thank the show The O.C., the movie Napolean Dynomite, and electronics, believe it or not. But from what I think the geek fashion is coming in, because having all the latest gadgets is a cool thing now.
Hope that makes sense.

At the risk of sounding stupid... What exactly is a boffin?

Brehon, i was loving your thread starters until now. Does it matter? Must we pay so much attention to our status in life, or even our social circle in school? No. Not quite.
