The Government should just leave the Tobacco Indutries alone. Isn't taking it to far making tobacco products and ads have surgeon general warnings on them? Isn't it ridiculous that people claim tobaccos is deadly when, in reality, if tobacco was really that deadly the ATF or FDA would close the industry down (Think about it. If a meat company sold a meat the killed people, would the government let them sell it.). Sure, the tobacco industries put addictives in their products but they don't deny it. Putting addictives in a tobacco product is no different than putting caffine in coke(Both sevre the same purpose, to keep people coming back for more.). I think it is sad that people view the tobacco industries as America's black eye.

the commercials on tv about how the tobacco companies are to blame for advertising to underage smokers is so rediculous. when i see that shit it makes me want to light up a cigarette right there. the truth is cigarettes sell themselves, the tobacco company doesnt really have to do anything..kids that want to smoke will and those that dont - wont, no matter how cool the tobacco company says it will make you

Smoking can relate to various health implications at both the micro and macro levels depending on the individual in question. Unfortunately the industry generates enormous amounts of retained reevenue and has an almost unequaled lobbying/influential power. On the whole i believe that the industries should continue to be pressured via various techniques available, but it is down to the individual choice and therefore the industry should continue to operate.

Ok, I actually ran across this whole argument while doing correspondance courses. It caught my intrest, primarilly because I am a smoker and I agree a lot with the points that marine16 is providing.
I decided to go out for a smoke and read the Surgeon General's Warning on my cigarette's. It says "SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, And May Complicate Pregnancy."
Now, marine16, I do agree with most of what you say, but I also noticed how you kept asking about a surgeon general warning that said smoking DOES cause these diseases. I was actually suprised to see that it said that, but it does. The only thing that says "may" is complicating pregnancy.
However, in the argument on weather or not tobacco companies should be shut down. I have to agree that despite the risks of smoking, tobacco companies should not be shut down.
Those jobs are helping individuals to pay their bills and as long as people want to smoke, I don't see any reason to try to unemploy people for someone elses beliefs.
We are American's. I'm a US Army soldier and I wear the uniform every day to defend our right as American's to make our own choices. If people want to smoke, they have every right to. Making people aware of the risks is one thing, but trying to stop smoking completely, is another. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and to make their own decisions. That is our right as American's.
To give my opinion on it, I believe that everyone should worry about themself and not try to make others live the life they think is perfect. We are all individuals and we make our own choices. What may seem right for one person may be completely wrong for another.
So, I'd have to say that everyone needs to keep their beliefs, their beleifs. Stop trying to make drastic changes in the life that so many have become acustom to.
People die all day, every day. Tobacco is no worse than any other death, it's still death. We are in this world to live and die. How we choose to live is our choice and we should not be told how we have to live our life just because someone in your family died from a disease that cigarettes can contribute to.

Lmao, HL... Dery said a while back, in a NM to me, that he had left for good. He had been searching on Google and got interested but didn't want to make it "a life commitment to something so childish" or something like that. As for RICE, we've established he's probably not returning anytime soon either. I will NM you.

Now, rice, lets just take several deep breathes... good...now go jump off a tall building. There that's better. What the heck was the point of that post? Geez. Dery, freedom is a respected member of YN and none of the old timers have a problem with his "Prince of YN" thing. Get over it and find something better to do. That said, I'll get on with responding to the original post: Marine, how can you possibly say that tobacco does not kill people? I mean really, how can you think that? How many studies need to be done for it to sink in? Heck, even SECOND HAND smoke is proving more serious than we ever though. Smoking is wrong. Period. I could live with it if it only hurt the people who smoke (ok no I couldn't but I'd be less against it anyway) but is DOESN'T. Second hand smoke KILLS. Not to mention causing all sorts of health problems for people who never actually smoked a single stinking cigarette. The only reason smoking isn't illegal is because the trade is so well established and makes so much money in America. And of course the fact that there are way to many smokers in America, any bill or law that did away with smoking would be shot down at once. Sorry if I've already posted on here and brought up the same arguments...I don't have time to read through it all.

I may very well have anger issues. That doesn't concern you at all. I may only be 18, but I've likely put up with a lot you'd have serious mental issues from as well. So shut up. Your sarcasm about my being "Prince of YouthNOISE" isn't funny; that was something that someone else created here. There's a "goddess", "Queen" and so on. Get used to it. We like to have fun while having political and social discussions. So sue me. And I really don't understand your logic. You're being rather hypocritical, in fact, going around calling my messages ambiguous. So what other "points" does my supposed "anger issues" support?

It is actually really simple. Cigarettes Kill People. How fast and how often is not the issue. Maybe it is slower than the warnings suggest and maybe it is faster. It doesn't matter. I urge you to go to a funeral of a mother or father who died of lung cancer and continue to debate the issue. Watch their children and spouse weep. See the sadness. Dead is Dead. Think about it. I, as a smoker, recently experienced this. Smoking sucks and means early death. Hands Down! The tobacco companies are evil and so is the governnment. The government only behaves this way since there are so many red neck smokers in the US that they could not possibly form a government unless they pander to the idiocy of the idiots they created due to hidden poverty and lack of ample education. (Some people in the US don't know how poor they are when we compare international standards. Most of them end up in the millitary and most smoke.) The US should be ashamed that we are even talking about this.

My stand on the subject are as follows. When I was twelve years old a thirteen year old 'friend' took me up the sand hill and stuck a cigarette in my mouth and threatened to hurt me if I didn't inhale. I didn't and got a black eye because of my stand. Later that same year this young man threw a rock and hit me in the other eye. Fortunately I didn't lose my eyesight. But, because I didn't accept the cigarette willingly, he learned to hate me becauase he'd been smoking since he was eight. And like an alchoholic, if you don't fall into the same mold or habit that the other person does they don't or won't trust the other one. He was lonely, he wanted a friend. I wouldn't smoke a cigarette to prove my 'loyalty.'
I don't smoke today and I convinced my father to stop smoking his pipes at the age I am now. I told him I loved him..It worked.
He's alive today, I believe, because he stopped smoking when I asked him to so many years ago.

Cooldude: Do you think they wouldn't have devloped a cigarette that doesn't cause cancer if they could ? Nicotine is carcinogenic and as such there will be no such safe cigarette. Cannabis is significantly safer, has been linked to zero deaths, zero cancer cases, and even the shrinking of tumors, but smoking even that is not good for your lungs; though better than tobacco. Vaporized cannabis is entirely harmless in that respect though, providing no harmful smoke but instead the vaporized active ingredients.
Why do you believe the cigarette companies are responsible for the actions of individuals who choose to smoke ? With all of the widely available and constantly perpetuated information on the ills of cigarette smoking, anyone who choses to smoke is doing so of their own voiltion with full knowledge of potential effects and should accept the consequences of their actions.

Why Should We leave them alone? If we do things will get worse as things go along and we will be living in a socity that revolves around lung cancer and other deases. The only way tabbaco industries could prevent lung cancer is by creating a ciggerette that dosen't cause deaseses and other types of cancer.
