I also think that both are to blame. But I do not support tabacco companies in many ways, I too have seen many friends think they can quit and find out that no matter how hard they try, they just can't stop, especially when they're stress out. They have learned to depend on it. It's so sad to see them like that. To think that many of them started cuz they wanted to be in a "crowd," and now they ended up being the outsiders, cuz almost no body likes someone smoking by them. Just sad.
My parents both smoke, and trust me, they're addicted. My dad has a heart condition, and has tried to quit, but he can't. Mom's tried tons of tims. When he and my mom started smoking, they really didn't know smoking was that bad for you. Also, I've got upper respiratory problems because of all the second hand smoke. Is that my fault? Smokers need to take responsibility for their actions, but it's not like the tobacco companies are totally innocent. They hid the fact that tobacco was addictive, and now they actively market a product that kills people. Jen.
The tabacco industry is partly to blame for people who smoke. Ever since the tabacco came out, they told people that they were good for you and make you look cool. So that's how and why tons of people are smokers today.
OK I agree that tabacco causes deaths and all that, but isn't it the industry's fault as well as the people's fault? Seriously both sides need to use common sense (especially smokers) ~Leah
i think that tobacco advertising should be banned, because it's promoting something that can cause cancer. And marine16, so you think tobacco isn't deadly? Well you're a bigger ****wit than I thought. I hope someone you know who smokes gets lung cancer. Then will you still support tobacco companies?
My paternal grandpa died when I was in the 5th grade. He started smoking at age 14. Before he died, he had to have one of his lungs removed. He lost all of his hair and could barely move. He died of lung cancer.
My maternal grandpa died when I was in 8th grade. He had had 2 or 3 heart attacks. He was a smoker for most of his life. He died of ALS.
My maternal grandma died when I was in 10th grade. She was also a smoker. She had diabetes, emphyzema (s/p?), and just about every other physical problem. She had to carry an oxygen tank with her at all times. She couldn't walk from the family room to the kitchen without resting. She died of her many complications.
Well, I don't know how your life has been affected by smoking. But mine has forever been changed. Smoking took away 3 of my 4 grandparents. It took them away from me long before they each died because of the effects of their smoking. If you can't stop smoking for yourself, then stop for the people you love.
The people to blame is the person who actually smoked. No one made them smoke. And the Truth commercials say the wrong things. Like the one commer. that had the young man talk about how his father died(you know, the spray painting thing), he blamed the ciggarate companies. for all I know is that his father killed himself! Then there is this other commer. which had those women ask other women what size baby they wanted, A or B, which A was a normal size and B which was a premature baby, and of course most of the women picked A, the girl said that some guy who worked for the company said that some women would perfer a smaller baby, which is of course is true, but its not just smoking that can lower a baby's birth rate, likedoing illegal drugs or one very big thing like alchol I know that some people would think because there addicted and then blame the smoking company, but they should all blame themselves because they could have not smoked at all, thats a chance they took and they deserve to pay the price of what they took. My late aunt died of smoking, and my dad and stepmother smokes. I wish he would stop because because his mother had diabetes and last uncle who is still alive has diabetes and is on dyalisis. i live with my mother which doesn't and I'm glad about that
yeah I have seen the lung picture, I've also seen people torn in half in car accidents...I still drive.
quote: I've never seen the appeal of putting hot, poisonous smoke into my lungs.
but that is the point of my rant, you are doing it, everyday. Along with millions of other toxins. Look it is fine and dandy to not like stuff, I don't like stuff. And like you said I don't go suing people over it or banning them. But I think there are so many more important issues other then why people smoke because it's icky.
Ok, Billy, here's a question for ya. Have you ever seen those pictures of a smoker's lung next to a picture of a healthy lung? Personally, I'd opt for the second option. I've never seen the appeal of putting hot, poisonous smoke into my lungs. I don't really care if OTHER people smoke... it's their own decision. But don't come crying to me (or to your lawyer) when you get sick.
quote: Well, you still need to make intelligent choices. I mean, I'd much rather die of old age than of lung cancer or emphysema.
stop driving cars and shut down all the factories, cigarettes contribute only 5% of the worlds pollution.
I'd much rather take medication for my illness to feel better, only all the medications cause cancer or various other wonderful things....so either way I lose...we all do...even our food is poison. But people harp on cigarettes cause they don't like the smell or try an convince me I'll die from it. I'm going to die anyway and I don't ban old ladies from public places because they put way too much cheap perfume on...
whoa...burger that tyraid wasn't directed at you....I think I just have some ill feelings about alot of things today
Ok, then, 4 reasons why it's politically unviable for the American government to ban cigarettes. Just cause they aren't illegal doesn't mean they aren't bad for you. We have to start making intelligent decisions about what we do to our bodies, and stop expecting the government to do it for us.
I smoke regularly. When i have a pack of cigarettes, i'll finish it in a day or two, depending on stress, and a couple of other factors. Am I addicted?? Probaly, never really tried to "quit" so i relly dont know. Its all a metter of perspaective and what you feel is right. Make your own decisions. But for now, ill keep on smoking.
I think there are three reasons why the ATF (or whoever would be responsible) hasn't shut down the tobacco industry.
1. There are too many people addicted to the stuff. A politician would probably lose votes like crazy if they ever attempted to get rid of tobacco.
2. The failure of Prohibition set too much of a precedent for the American government to try something like that again. The increase in crime (bootleg cigarettes etc) would be a great strain on law enforcement.
3. Tobacco lobbyists make a lot of noise and pay a lot of money to make sure that politicians focus their attention elsewhere.
In short, it would be politically unviable for the American government to outlaw cigarettes.
We put men to death for comiting a hanous crime and killing a person... How many countless people have the tabaco industrys killed..Shouldnt we put them to death.. We lock people up for hitting somone while driving even if it was an accident. The companys know exactly what they are selling there is no mistery... Its NOT and accident. They lied to us and told us it wasnt harful for so many years by then many people were addicted to it... The majority of new smokers have parents that smoke So where is the cycle going to end?????.........
I think tobacco companies can be blamed for much of what is happening to smokers. I feel that tobacco is very dangerous. Many have died primarily because of what the tobacco and tar has done to their lungs. Also, just because something is dangerous doesn't mean that the government will abolish it. Take some of those crazy stunts you hear about on the news for example. The government doesn't forbid people from doing these things. I do not think it is the government's responsibility to abolish tobacco. I feel that it is the government's responsibility to make sure that tobacco companies are telling the 100% truth and that they advertise to a crowd that is mature enough to truly comprehend the negative effects of tobacco (I do not feel that this group includes teens). The people have a right to be a little suspicious of the tobacco companies, after all. Just about 20 years ago, they completely lied about having nicotene in their products. Many people are still addicted to this day from smoking in the past without knowing about the nicotene. It is true that it is these addicted people's and also people not even addicted's own choice to either smoke or not, but people have weaknesses. They may not want to smoke, but find it to difficult to resist. I think it is underhanded and wrong to exploit human weaknesses for personal gain.
