Question:
what do you all think about testing on animals?

personally, i think it is completely wrong. animals are brutally tortured all the time with liitle regulation. it seems to be something that our society thinks about once in a while, sighs, and goes about its business. the fact is that all the time, rats, mice, rabbits, dogs, cats, chimpanzees, etc. are subject to people's forcing things into their eyes, down their throats, on their skin, and elsewhere. these animals suffer tremendously, going through blinding pain, seizures, and often death.

thats mostly cosmetics, i think. but animals are also experimented on for "science," and scientists often breed litters of mice and other animals with missing or extra genes, to see how the animals will be affected. they dispense with these creatures' lives carelessly, as though animals are only here to satisfy our curiosity.

a lot of testing on animals is also done for medicines. i feel this is not only cruel, but pointless. only testing on humans can ensure that the medicine is safe for humans. besides, animals will in no way benefit from the medicines they are "helping" with. is it fair that they should suffer for humans?

i believe that humans are not better or more important than other species. is anyone with me on this?

Choices:
yes, every creature has a right to live
no, animals are here for our benefit

Ah- I had to take a stand against this age old debate for a school project. I'm completely against animal testing. Unlike some people here who run completely on their emotions (which isn't always bad) I've done research on both sides of the subject and I think that animal testing is wrong. There are aleternative ways of testing the results of a product; and when companys test their chemicals on the animals- they generally rub a healthy amount of the substance on their eyes, genitals, and other organs. The animal will sometimes bleed, vomit, get diareha, or other symtoms that would drive any human to wish they were dead- ironically, the animals usually will die. Animal testing is wrong and should be stopped.

I think animal testing is completely wrong. Just because animals can't speak or do some of the things we do, people treat them as if they are nothing. Animals feel just like we do. Animal testing isn't fair. These animals can do nothing to defend themselves. Some are even bred for testing. They have no chance at being free. They have no chance at actually living. We don't test things on humans. Instead we make the animals suffer. And for what? A new lipstick or shampoo? When did such things become more important than things around us? To those who do the testing: Think about how these animals are confined to the lab. How would you take it if someone decided that since you were smaller or couldn't do something they could, that you would live a certain way. That since you weren't their species that you were insignificant and it didn't matter what happened to you. Just think about that next time you put cherry lipstick on a dog. And think about what's going through their head. Mad

Ok now it's been a few weeks, and gemeni has made several other posts. I'm wondering why none have been made in here...

Ahh, I haven't seen this thread in awhile. Anyways, I stopped responding since it seemed as if we were repeating ourselves over and over again with the same information restated in a different format. I still disagree with you, but I respect your opinions. My opinions are the same, -but- it wasn’t all a complete waste. I feel more open-minded now. How gratifying.

"Science has proven that dogs, elephants, goats, and many other animals have the intelligence to actually have and express emotions just like we do"

i would just like to point out that emotion and comprehension are 2 different things..

also i think the main problem here is the people that are totally against animal testing only look at it from an emotional standpoint and not a logical standpoint, even though they sometimes attempt to use logic in their debate.. they think of fluffy the cat or spot the puppy and think i love fluffy/spot and i would not want someone to hurt/test on them... and by doing so evade the logical points of this topic..

anyone that loves animals(myself included) does not want to see an animal in pain, muchless some one doing something that we see as hurting the animal.. that is why we have a hard time with this topic.. the logical and factual aspect is, it is needed, it is not as bad as people would like to think in most cases.. and it does help..

i personally would like to see a day where animal testing is NOT needed, BUT i know that it IS needed now so i am not against it.. because i look at it from a logical standpoint..

this is hard, b/c i'm right in between...
here it goes for ppl who care about what i think:

TESTING ANIMALS
A. Cosmetics:
That's stupid. That should be stuff we can handle an allergic reaction to every once in a while and try out for ourselves. Animals don't need to be used for this.

B. Medicine:
This is where my thoughts for the human-race play a part in the issue. You see, if we refused to test animals to make sure that such medications like narcotics or over-the-counter drugs are ok for humans...no offense, but what if the whole economy suddenly grew sick? or, died? and the docs just kept making the same medicine that would harm everyone? you may argue, "then, don't take it", but, what...now ppl can only buy certain meds for headaches, stomaches, etc? you know how insane that is? and, that would be a nightmere w/ narcotics. if a person w/ a spinal injury is prescribed this one narcotic that the doc knows will work for the patient, fine. but, what if side effect crap such as stomaches, vomiting, etc. got in the way? yeah, you may think that this happens w/ most narcotics, but what if it caused a more serious situation when the patient already has to deal w/ an injury? it's hell if you catch a bad case of the flu and suffer pain from a serious injury at the same time - i know, my mom is about terminally-ill now due to a complicated, rare injury in her upper spine, right behind another plate and the brain (looooong story, ppl...don't make me get into it)
but, what i'm trying to say is that we could save hell for society (and a lot more of it for ill-ridden ppl) if we just did testing w/ a few lab animals in medicine. Besides, I hear that scientists treat lab animals very well...and, after the suffering, they gently put them out of their misery. don't get me wrong - i love animals (look at my name! collies rock), and i do wish that any pet animal wouldn't be lab tested. but, rats, mice, and rabbits could care less. they don't have the ability to fully feel...they go along w/ whatever's up in their lives, they don't have the sense to pride themselves...unlike at least pet animals that can feel affection and love. B/c, if lab animals did have a sense of pride and internal feelings, scientists wouldn't even be considering lab testing...they're not that dumb, ppl.

So, that's my outline. Animals for cosmetics? no, that's pointless. Animals for medicine? yes.

i think its flat out wrong to test on animals. who says that were any better or more intelegent or resorsful than them? we have no right. how would we feel if the tables were turned and we were being tested on?

Hmm, well WE say we're more intelligent and resourceful. Simply because we are. Look to previous posts for a nice debate on that.
Well of course, turning the tables as you describe it is a flawed example. Animals are not as concious, feeling, or aware as we are. Some may be, Dolphins, cimpanzees, etc, which is why those areas are a bit iffy. However, the point stands that the vast majority of test animals are not aware in the way we comprehend it.

I think testing on animals is partly good and partly bad! It's good, 'cause if they didn't test on animals first and they did it on us, many people could die, and it's bad, 'cause animals are a big part of mother nature , and they are necesaary for many things we make and do!
In any way I think people should keep control of the animals they test on, it's only fare!

Well if we're going into biblical arguments, then it's the damned snake that got us kicked out of Eden, i think they deserve it. Razz

Bluebunny- Not so for medicines and many other valuable procedures. For cosmetics, yes, animal testing is a bit wanton. But it is still necceary and beneficial to humans in many other cases.

I think companies that test their products on animals are wasting their time. People can find the products of the same quality that were and were not tested on animals. Why bother doing something that so many people disagree with when you can just avoid the situation altogether? I just don't get it...

I think that testing on animals should be illegal. It's immoral. Some companies test on people, but the volunteer for that. Animals are innocent and can't control what's done to them. It's like testing on a baby.
