get the u.s out of the UN? nothing would make me happier...except that the U.S can't keep their noses out of n e thing. notice how with a few exceptions the U.S has managed to screw up every good intention with one corruption or another. so if they pulled out of they UN they would have nothing to justify their wars and arrogance.

I cannot believe how self centered and stuck up you republicans are. Because the UN wouldn't do what you want it doesn't work? Morons.

Ah, anyone realize the UN was our idea? Dating back to the League of Nations? (NOT gentlemen.) I think that we have unfortunately locked ourselves into a position because of the Cold War where we are expected to help out in the world's problems. That, and I personally believe that as the single richest nation on Earth, we have a civic duty to help the rest of the world.

The U.N. is not a waste of time. Think about what happens all over Africa everyday. The U.N. stops major wars from breaking out by reacting to small little ones that we never hear about. And the U.N. is who sends aid and medicine and supplies all over the world to where it is needed.

Most importantly, though, the U.N. is the one thing that connects the human race. It represents almost every country in the world. It is the one place where all countries are allies and not enemies, and is a way for countries to solve issues they have, by going to other countries in the U.N. and the U.N. itself for help. The U.N. also makes laws that it's members have to follow that help do away with thing like pollution, child labor, disease, slavery, etc. It's definitely not useless. If the U.S. wants to leave, okay, leave, it's our decision. But just because we leave (which is another topic altogether) doesn't mean it doesn't work. After all, it seems to work for the rest of the countries all over the world...

You people who don't think that National Socialism is Nazism are stupid. Nazism means National Socialism in German. Idiots.

So are you back? Or in the GTU Library? I'll always believe that libertarians are either insane, or well, insane (Forgot the second part... oh well).

There's a difference between a tax-and-spend liberal and a Marx-worshipping Socialist, just like there's a difference between a fiscal conservative and a Fascist.

I've learned a lot about my views this past week up in Washington, and the more I think of it, the more social conservatives act and legislate like Big Government liberals.

Both are wrong by every stretch of the imagination.

Time to get some honest-to-God libertarianism in there and root these idiots out.

Hold on a minute. The UN does take action--it's not only about talk. Yes, it was designed as a global forum, but it and its subsidiary organizations DO a lot of things.

Now, the thing you have to understand is that it's not the UN's decision to make if it's going to take action. It's actions are almost totally dependent on the will of the member states. If they're intractably opposed to something, it isn't going to happen.

quote:
They should think that war is sometimes necessary. Not good but sometimes necessary.

Although one can't say that the UN "thinks" anything (it's just an organization of countries, not a person), it does "think" such things. The '91 war against Iraq, the deployment of troops in Korea in 19 , were both sanctioned by the UN Security Council. Add in a large number of peacekeeping (well, peace enforcement, actually)missions where UN troops have been fired upon (and sometimes died), and fired back, and it's clear that the UN is not an extreme idealist group that considers war to be incomprehensible.

The problem is again, that the actions of the UN are determined almost entirely by its members. Compounding that problem is the fact that UN military action has to be decided by the UN Security Council, including the yes votes of all 5 permanent nations, who are very divided on issues of military action. (See the recent conflict in Iraq.)

Finally, think about this quote by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, former US ambassador to the UN: "The Department of State desired that the United Nations prove utterly ineffective in whatever measures it undertook. This task was given to me, and I carried it forward with no inconsiderable success."

Yes, the UN has had a lot of accomplishments. And I'm happy for that. But sometimes, talking does not help. But for some reason, the UN can't seem to figure that out. I don't think the U.S. needs to get out of the UN. What I think is that the UN needs to become more organized and actually think according to the differentcircumstances. They think that talking is the best to solve things. Sometimes it's not. The UN needs to reform drastically, while still doing its job. They should think that war is sometimes necessary. Not good but sometimes necessary.

the UN is worthless and does absolutly nothing.

What the hell are you people all smoking? The UN does an insane amount compared to its budget-which happens to be less than that of the NYC Dept. of Ed. Over 30 million refugees aided by UNHCR since 1951, a million kids a year's lives saved by oral rehydration salts (distributed primarily by UNICEF), peacekeeping efforts in places where the major powers were unwilling to get involved in (e.g. Cambodia, Haiti, East Timor), hell, the World Health Organization was primarily responsible for the eradication of smallpox. Think about that for a while. One of the most feared contemporary diseases was done in by a UN organization.

Face it boys and girls, the UN is here to stay, and the US is gonna be in it. You know why? Because the people support and believe in it. 72% of Americans polled had a positive viewpoint of the UN in a study done by the Better World Fund...so deal.

Still don't buy it? Type "UN Accomplishments" into any search engine and check things out for yourself.

I'm surprised that the UN hasn't kicked the US out yet. We certainly deserve it.

yes..in a a way we DO deserve it bc we didnt even listen to them...but then again, if we didnt go to war, who knows what saddam would have done. the UN is just a bunch of ppl that think talking works better than action...and in MOST cases...talking does work best. but when a psychotic dictator has weapons...action is best. the UN is worthless and does absolutly nothing.

Hmm... that's like saying + = - Besides everyone knows that conservatives are closer to nazis than socialists. Conservatives and the nazis believe in big business and nationalism. Socialists believe in a somewhat regulated economy and are all for labor unions and the working class. Besides, there no more socialist than we are. And um, socialism is a good thing.

I was saying that the UN has not done anything good. Yes, there were those problems before the UN, but they are continuing.

By the way, the EU and America are not heading toward a war like most seem. The EU is a weak gathering of a bunch of weak nations. And most of them are socialist. National Socialism= Nazism.

Yes, before the UN there were none of these problems, no world wars or anything. The world was actually a very perfect place. Damn the UN for screwing with it.

I think I'm more worried about what the E.U. is doing, as opposed to the U.N.

Though we do fund a quarter of the U.N.'s budget - which absolutely sucks because they're the poster boy of socialism.

I was sad to see that bill die, but what can you expect really? Many of our politicians belong to at least one global government support group, mainly the Council on Foreign Relations...sigh.
