The UN needs to be reworked but we shouldn't abandon it. It has value to the international community, but only if it is given prestige, credibility, and some authority. Currently it doesn't because the US has stepped all over it. The US needs to be keept in line, there must be some accountabilty. I am very wary of US power. Some important decision need to be made that decide our foreign policy in the upcoming decade. What kind of role will we place in the world. The world's policeman. Which comes first: Domestic wellbeing, or the world? Will we give underdevloped countries a voice. Without the UN, I fear the US would be making international decisions on their own, on their own behalf. UN must be reworked so this doesn't happen, and a country can't decide whether or not to obey the UN depending on how they feel.

I heartily agree that we need to get the heck out of the UN.
The first and foremost reason is that right now, we ARE the world's superpower. Quite frankly, we CAN do whatever we darn-well please; however, we do keep our power under check.
In the total of civilization, we're the first super-power that has bowed to the wishes of others. Think about it. Did Napoleon go to the UN? What about the British Empire, when it was such? Oh-- and Rome? If you even *suggested* to each of the above super-powers that they make their decision to conquer based on the thoughts of what would be a UN in their time, they would have laughed you off the face of the map and had you hanged. So the fact that we're making our decisions based on what the UN says is laughable.
Secondly, the UN itself is laughable. I mean, c'mon-- before we took out Iraq, the UN appointed a representative of said country to oversee International Disarming standards or something. I mean, IRAQ?! Pul-eeeze. And there's all kinds of similar incidents going on just like that.
Oh-- and what about the French represenative to the UN who mocked and insulted the US rep?
To make a long story short, Clinton NEVER went to the UN before doing what he wanted to do with our military, and neither should Bush or any future president.
When all is said and done, the UN has absolutely no relevance to the global community.

I agree about leaving the UN but a lot of the reason you listed sound like unfounded accusations and the link joey gave isn't a link to a very credible site.

I totally agree with you. The UN is the stupidest thing to ever come into existence. It has only brought around more wars and caused more trouble. Just count the number of wars there were before the UN and how many there have been since 1945 when it was formed.
