My news is a little bit late, seeing as I’m out of the country and all, but I was curious to see what people thought of the FCC's decision to allow the giant media corporations to now own television stations that reach 45 percent of the nation's audience, up from 35 percent. Am I the only one who is disturbed from the potential risk this could have, mainly the press eventually being controlled by two major companies and therefore they can choose what people see, I hope to god a media giant like fox doesn’t gain control. What do you guys think?
OH! I get it now! So that's why all the news channels broadcasted the State-fed Iraq War line, which was sometimes just simply false, almost never covering the negative aspects, just merrily hailing the brave US liberators.
It makes sense!
This also fits into how 90% of the media completely ignored it when Al Gore won the state of Florida in the elections way back when. Hmmmmmm. Yup, liberal.
Do people who call the media liberal even think, or did they just hear Rush Limbaugh say it once?
Fox News verges on the Stalinist.
But, considering how little variation there is on Television, I doubt the FCC ruling will make that big of an effect. Just pray you get BBC America and Cartoon Network.
Don't you chose what you see??? I mean can't you just not watch if you don't want to because believe me there's more healthy activities then watching TV.
what do you think of sarte's "fill in the hole" philosophy about people constantly striving to fill in holes - be it with knowledge, experience, or sex? i'm not a huge fan of his exsistentialism myself, but have fun exploring his works.
Kg, While I agree with most of your views on the electronic media, mainly it being far from what I would label "news", I still have concerns, mainly because of the fact that people have short attention; also because companies such as Viacom, MSN and such are starting to invest into the newspaper market. As for the damn "liberals" controlling the "media" I will agree that most Journalists lean to Liberal side due to the nature of Journalism, but I do disagree that the media is "controlled" by "liberals". A book that, I believe, shows very much the opposite of this is the book by Eric Alterman titled "what Liberal media." As for Fox I agree, KG hit the head on the nail on why I don't like the station in general. Their programs that are not supposed to be commentary based still contain commentary, I.E. the Shepard Smith report, I constantly hear him label items as "disgusting", "outrageous", and these comments should be left to the viewer to say not the Anchor. As for the quote Kg, good one, as you can tell I like "The Progressive" and am I big fan of Howard Zinn and have read many of the books in "A peoples history" series, which in many cases has led to me being label as a "commie" do to the nature of his writings. As for my trip, it has been going well, this is more of a relax week, a time for me and my gf to relax on the beach and catch up on some reading; the area that has caught my attention is Jean Paul Sartre and his Existentialist philosophy, which I have found very interesting indeed. Regards
the FCC's decision will just make the news that much more homogenized towards pandering to the biggest, and sadly least intelligent, population - the proud owners of 15 second attention spans.
news today is quite disgusting in that it hardly reports news but rather news commentary. people are evidently not only too busy to follow current events, but they are in fact too busy to think about them. we then have news "anchors" that describe things as "heroic," "disgusting," or "self-serving." those are labels that the viewer should make, not the news programs.
it doesn't matter if you're getting fox or viacom - every program places a slant upon the news that they report. ideally, you should watch different stations just to get a variety of views; with the FCC's decision it will be that much harder to do.
lastly, most of the news media has more liberal views than conservative; it is the nature of journalism. however, fox is more opinionated that virtually any other news station. the anchors are constantly interjecting their opinions on stories and giving completely subjective descriptions of people... the story selection is already slanted by every news station - let's at least try to keep the commentary to commentary shows. let's not confuse the defunct "politically incorrect," "the o'reilly factor," "larry king live," or "rush limbaugh hour" with news - those are news commentaries.
lastly, here's a quote that i thought djmagnusa might appreciate. i hope that your vacation is still going well.
"The distinction between dying for your country and dying for your government is crucial in understanding what I believe to be the definition of patriotism in a democracy." Howard Zinn, The Progressive, June 2003
Altough I agree that fox is defintley the most conservative the ENTIRE media, every chanel you have one your tv and most of the radio stations, are run by liberals who are completley bias and have no idea about how to be subjective.
