Is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization even needed any more? I mean, what does it do? It hasn't been involved in any conflict since the Bosnian Civil War of the '90s. The UN fits the bill nicely, although I'd make a case that both NATO and the UN are useless, for there is the US, all-powerful democracy that it is.

I think world peace will only be achieved once there is a dominating force that coerces tyrannical or genocidal governments to conform. The UN doesn't fit this bill. NATO, being a military organization, is possibly better suited. But it's not organized for this task. I think, instead of disbanding NATO, it needs reogranization to the new goals of the 21st century.

I was being slightly sarcastic with the US part. I think we've screwed up enough people. The UN is a pitiful attempt at world peace, although they seem to be mucking up that duty. World peace is a wonderful idea, but in reality, it is no more than that. And NATO...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in response to the Warsaw Pact of the Communist Bloc. That was all they were created for. No more, no less. However, with the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, NATO is no longer needed.

The US should take a non-interventionist policy towards the rest of the world. They have their conflicts, we have ours. Only a fool tries to separate two enemies.

So what? Everyone sucked it up in Bosnia. The UN doesn't fill the bill because its so slow and corrupt. Countries also fail to provide enough troops. Yeah, and have fun with unilateral US. It didn't work in Iraq and won't work elsewhere, multilateral forces are a must. The problem is that the US doesn't interevene with enthic cleansing or genocide unless it threathens its direct interests. For example, although a lot died under Saddam, the biggest reasons was to secure a strategic geopolitcal location with a ton of oil. If the US fits the bill then why doesn't get involved in Darfur, Congo and Kashmir. Why didn't we stop Rwanda where 800,000 innocent people where killed in 6 months. And when we went into Liberia, the most recent attempt of the US at a peacekeeping operation it was for the purpose of stabilizing west africa which has....a ton of oil.

The NATO is useless. Let the damn UN live but kill NATO, I think.
