In other words: Are we as special as we think?
This is a question that one of my teachers asked a long time ago, and it's kept me awake at night ever since.

-Some call me a wandering soul. Some call me a traveler without a purpose or destination. Some call me diffrent, resevered, maybe even dangerous. What I truly am is what you'll have to find out for yourself.

Humans are basically animals with a complex. Like all animals, our inherent purpose is to reproduce. Then we die. I've mentioned this in another thread.. that on this earth, the only reason we exist is so that we may pass our genes on to the next generation.
Humans, logically, should not still exist. We're slow, possess no brute strength, have no fur to keep ourselves warm, poor senses, etc. etc... but our mind has kept us a few steps ahead of the other creatures on this planet. Thus, we think ourselves superior as we destroy our own world with all our human advancements in science in technology.
We are special in that we think.. differently. But that is not to say we are better than any other animal.

Organism: quote: 2 : an individual constituted to carry on the activities of life by means of organs separate in function but mutually dependent : a living being

No, we aren't simple but the animals around us are just as emotional and unique as we are, thus making us far less than special. We were watching some videos on Chimpanzees and animal emotions in my Anthropology class and that really helped me change how I felt about us as humans and our animal neighbors on planet Earth. When a Chimp gets annoyed with another, it will sometimes shake its hand or wrist at them and the other will return the signal as if it were vulgar, or a mother Chimp will quickly grab her child and discipline him/her if it plays too roughly with others or if it acts like a brat and throws tantrums. They have a deep human-like understanding of each other's emotions and even have a sense of morality. We are not special in the animal kingdom and we never will be.

Organisms are living things...how is it that people aren't living?

People are not organisms. They were created in God's image.

Like it was said, it depends on how you define special, what you believe in, and what you're comparing our specialness to.
People are very complex organisms. Our cognitive abilities surpass any other organisms that we are aware of. We can feel a variety of emotions, like love and hate and jealousy, and consciously choose to have children or not to have children. (Frankly, pregnancy amazes me!)
I would say that the individual human is special, because indeed, they are unique. No one has the same DNA, we all interpret things differently, there truly is no one person identical to another.
but the human race? No, just complex, very very complex.

what a dumb question. even if humans were related to animals, God didn't create anything simple enough to be understood fully by man. God created us in His image and died for us on the cross. if you think you are some simple being, you must be awful simple minded. humans are complex and beloved by the God of the universe. We are not simple!

Humans are not simple. We are only as special as we let ourselves be. In other words, simple? no. Special? no again.

Special is not the same as complex. We're biologically very complex - however, many animals are too. So, are we special? I suppose the size of our brains relative to our bodies sets us apart, but we are just overdeveloped apes. My judgement is that humans are very complex. However it depends, like so many things, on the perspective you're looking at us from. Bex

I think that there is no purpose to life because we have sex and then later on in life we die.

No I don't think were special, we happen to be at the top of the food chain but, we are also self destructing. Any other animal would take notice of the self destructive manner of their actions and stop them. A mouse wouldn't chase a cat but we waste away our environment with hummers and power plants.
