They have the humane society for a reason. Its there job to bring in strays and to find them good homes. However, you can do your part by neutereing, or spaying your pets. Also if you see a stray dog and it has a collar a lot of time the phone # of its owner will be on the tag and you can call the owner. Or if there is no # call the Humane Society. YOU can also call the HUmane Society anytime you see a stray.

I'm (or the local strays are, rather) really lucky because we have a good animal shelter where I live. They treat the animals as best they can with the money they get and avoid putting them down at nearly all costs.

Thanx. I help my parents with their greyhound rescue group and often volunteer with the local SPCA. I sort of live in an animal shelter. There are 15 to 20 dogs in my house at any given time. We do not mistreat them. We give them veterinary attention the likes of which they have never seen before. When we get one fresh off the track I administer Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccinations myself. I spend up to an hour lying down with each dog removing parasites like ticks and fleas from between its toes, in its ears, between their legs, and those little dimple cavities on their chests.

All the shelters I've seen are wonderful...the animals all get a second chance at life. I visited a very large shelter in Springfield, and yes, the animals were in crates, but they also got to come out quite often and play outside or in a room with other animals. I currently volunteer for the Greyhound Rescue League of NE Inc. in Mendon, and the dogs there are treated VERY well. So to say they are better off in one or the other is a huge generalization!
I myself wouldn't get a pet from a breeder, I'd much rather adopt...when I'm living on my own I hope to adopt a Greyhound or two.

If I could adopt all the animals that I see in the shelters ( I hardly ever seen any strays on the streets in my town) I would. But I can't, so I just really hope that they go to a good home soon.

It's a tough call, but the streets can be pretty mean. Even wooded suburban areas can be pretty hostile. I, unfortunately see animals dead in the road - lots of them - every day. But even the wooded areas aren't much friendlier. Food is hard to find in the winter, there are ticks, Lyme disease, etc. So animals might be somewhat safer in shelters. Only thing about shelters - aside from the fact that many PTS animals, is that disease can and does spread very easily. So I can't say one is better than the other.

yeah maybe we should do what peta does... "rescue" and KILL them..have you been to a shelter? granted i'm not a fan either but they have room to move around.. most have indoor outdoor runs.. and putting animals in kennels does not cause those things UNLESS they are kept in them for long periods of time with no interaction and excercise... as far as the angry thing.. that is a joke.. too funny.. by the way.. how is ingrid doing these days? still living in her own world?

i dont take animals to shelters because most shelters mistreat animals, they are by far better out in the streets. I just prefer to get some food and give it to them.
why are animals mistreated in shelters? well theyre NORMALLY put into a small cage , where they can barely move. it gives them psychological diseases and causes their muscles to get smaller. When they finally get out they normally act strange (bark a lot, bite, are basically angry or depressed). Sometimes the shelter people dont take care of them and they die of hunger/depression. Sometimes they are alone in a room, which makes them hiperactive bla bla bla i think you get it
